Is Jujutsu Kaisen Manga finished? Find out the current status of the beloved battle shonen manga of the modern generation.
Is Jujutsu Kaisen Manga finished? Indeed, this is a question that has been on the minds of a lot of fans, especially those who solely follow the anime. The latest arc of the manga, aka the Shinjuku Showdown arc, gathered immense hype from fans worldwide, as it featured the epic showdown between The King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna, and quite literally the entire cast of characters.
The Jujutsu Kaisen manga officially concluded on September 30, 2024, bringing a definitive end to the beloved shonen series. Although many fans were anticipating the announcement of a sequel to the series following its end, it is yet to happen.
The Controversial Ending To Jujutsu Kaisen
When the Shinjuku Showdown arc was at its climax, there was an announcement that shook the entire fanbase. The Jujutsu Kaisen manga was announced to be ending in the next five chapters. This created a sense of dread amongst every fan of the manga, as they feared that the mangaka, Gege Akutami, might rush the ending of the series.
The fans’ prediction came true, much to their dismay. The finale of the manga created a massive controversy on social media. Most of the fans were immensely let down by the series’ ending. According to them, Akutami rushed the ending of the manga without properly addressing several key plotlines, that will likely remain unresolved forever.
On top of that, a lot of fans felt that the climax of the Shinjuku Showdown arc and Sukuna’s defeat were executed in an extremely rushed manner. Overall, the rushed pacing, multiple unanswered questions, and unresolved plotlines made the Jujutsu Kaisen ending a subject of heavy criticism.
How Much of Jujutsu Kaisen Is Left To Be Animated
To date, MAPPA Studios has adapted 137 chapters of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, which includes 8 story arcs that were covered in the first two seasons of the anime. For a better understanding, here is a list of all the arcs that were in Seasons 1 & 2 of the anime:
- Fearsome Womb arc
- Vs. Mahito arc
- Kyoto Goodwill Event arc
- Death Painting arc
- Gojo’s Past arc
- Shibuya Incident arc
This leaves about four more arcs, or 134 chapters yet to be animated. The arcs are Itadori’s Extermination arc, Perfect Preparation arc, Culling Game arc, and the Shinjuku Showdown arc; among which the first two arcs will be adapted at the beginning of the upcoming season 3.
Culling Game arc is by far the longest arc in the entire series, and it will likely be split into two halves – with the first half being adapted along with Itadori’s Extermination and Perfect Preparation arcs in season 3, while the latter will likely be adapted along with the Shinjuku Showdown arc in a possible season 4 of the anime.
Everything We Know About Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3
MAPPA Studios has not revealed much regarding Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 i.e. the official release date, episode count, and other key information. All we know for sure is that a season 3 has been greenlit right after the conclusion of season 2.
The studio has confirmed that Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 will be adapting the Culling Game arc, and that it is currently in production. The upcoming season may release in mid to late 2025 or early 2026. Although no concrete news has been released, it can be assumed that the staff will likely remain the same for the anime, until announced otherwise.
Following the season 2 finale, MAPPA Studios released a short teaser for Jujutsu Kaisen season 3. However, fans received no further trailers or teasers for the upcoming season. Cast members who are expected to return include the following:
- Junya Enoki as Yuji Itadori
- Yuma Uchida as Megumi Fushiguro
- Takahiro Sakurai as Kenjaku
- Junichi Suwabe as Ryomen Sukuna
- Noriko Hidaka as Yuki Tsukumo
- Megumi Ogata as Yuta Okkotsu
Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 will introduce new characters like Higuruma, Kashimo, Hakari, Takaba, and Naoya. Fans can watch the upcoming season on Crunchyroll, which aired the anime’s two seasons and may air season 3.
The Possibility of a Jujutsu Kaisen Sequel
Fans expected that the series might receive a sequel right after it was announced that the Jujutsu Kaisen manga would receive only a handful of chapters to conclude the Shinjuku Showdown arc and the epilogue. There were too many plotlines and character arcs.
However, there has been no news about a Jujutsu Kaisen sequel to date. The chances of the series having a sequel are quite slim. Moreover, the manga finale made it apparent that Akutami wasn’t planning on continuing the story. In addition, Akutami said that he wanted to pursue other projects after the manga’s conclusion.
Conclusion
The odds for a Jujutsu Kaisen sequel are low and, instead, the arcs would be adapted in the season to come.
