Is Marvel Rivals Still Popular Almost Five Months After Launch?

How is Marvel Rivals doing in terms of popularity, almost five months after its full release in December 2024?

NetEase Games fully released Marvel Rivals on December 6, 2024, and the game immediately became popular. Before the December release, the game was being tested by gamers in a closed beta program. During the time between the game’s first announcement and full release, players had almost forgotten about the project. It wasn’t until the pre-launch marketing that the game took off once more.

Successfully, a couple of million players were already playing the game only a few days after the December launch. But was it just a sweet starting phase, or are players still in love with the new Marvel hero-shooter?

Has Marvel Rivals Maintained Its Popularity?

Since its launch, Marvel Rivals has been coming through with its promise. The game follows a live-service model. However, it doesn’t have any gacha or “pay-to-win” mechanics. All heroes are free, and the cosmetics can also be obtained without spending real-life money and completing missions. Not to forget that the game is regularly pumping out a plethora of fresh content, new events, stylish cosmetics, and balance changes. These are only a few reasons as to why Marvel Rivals can be considered better than Overwatch 2.

The game has so far satisfied both competitive and casual players. There is a Quick Match mode to enjoy casual play and a Competitive mode to put your skills to the test. Players can also indulge in the Arcade modes like Doom Match and Conquest for some unique fun. The lore of the game introduces two new playable characters to the game each season, which makes players keep returning.

Marvel Rivals reached an all-time peak in January when 644,269 players across the world were playing simultaneously on Steam. However, the 24-hour peak at the time of writing is 159,426. The latter isn’t bad at all, but a far falloff from the all-time peak. However, it’s important to note that these stats only represent the Steam charts, and the real number will be higher than this because the game is also available on current-gen consoles.

With the number of players excited about the game in online communities, I would say that Marvel Rivals is still pretty popular among hero-shooter fans. How long the game will carry this popularity is yet to be seen.
