In the world of One Piece, the Marines act as antagonists, constantly hindering Luffy and his crew. While this led to many of them being hated, Monkey D. Garp is a rare character who is beloved by the entire fanbase. During the Egghead Island Arc, he got into an intense fight which left viewers fearing that he might be dead in One Piece.

Fans can rejoice at the fact that Monkey D. Garp is not dead in One Piece. Let us explore the events leading up to his alleged death and the evidence that the character survived.

Who Is Monkey D. Garp?

Monkey D. Garp is a legendary Marine and Vice Admiral known as “Garp the Fist.” Along with being one of the strongest figures in the entire series, he is also the paternal grandfather of Luffy and the adoptive grandfather of Ace.

Garp has constantly upheld the honor of the Marines over several decades and is known as the Hero of the Marines. Most notably, Garp hates World Nobles and does not hold contempt for all pirates, as he worked together with Gol D. Roger in the God Valley Incident and still loves Luffy and Ace.

Monkey D. Garp is an eccentric man who is fair and respects the freedom of others. He is a righteous individual who has trained many next-generation Marines. Having inherited the “Will of D” himself, he has a mysterious quality shared by influential figures who challenge the authority of world powers.

While Garp’s contribution to this remains unseen, his immense power could undoubtedly alter the world order of One Piece. So, why do fans think Garp is dead?

When Luffy and his gang were busy rescuing Dr. Vegapunk in Egghead, tensions were rising between the Marines and the Blackbeard Pirates on Hachinosu Island.

A great number of Marines and innocents had been captured by the powerful Blackbeard Pirates, infamous for their evil ways. Since Koby was an important Marine Captain trained by Garp himself, he exchanged his freedom to save his comrades.

Garp strongly believed Koby was the future of the Marines and attacked the island to save his protege. While causing great destruction with his Supreme King Haki and fist attacks, he was startled when Aokiji showed up as a representative of the Blackbeard Pirates.

The former Marine Admiral and Hero of the Marines had a fierce fight of ice against raw strength. Unfortunately, Garp was taken by surprise and stabbed by Shiryu while protecting Koby. Even after this, he put up a valiant fight to allow all the Marines to escape but eventually fell to Aokiji’s ice powers, lying at the edge of death with a defiant look on his face.

Is Monkey D. Garp Dead in One Piece?

Oda is no stranger to faking out deaths in One Piece and has brought back fan-favorite characters on several occasions. Since Garp was never explicitly stated to be dead, there was still a good chance he had survived. At the same time, since he had faced a powerful ex-Admiral and the dangerous Blackbeard Pirates, there was always the possibility he would turn up dead.

In Chapter 1126 of the One Piece Manga, Aokiji confirmed that Garp had survived their battle and was a captive of the Blackbeard Pirates. Despite having wanted to kill him, Garp’s powers and spirit were higher than anticipated, and all the pirates had to work together to take him down.

The major reason Garp had been captured and left close to death was the betrayal of his former pupil Aokiji. By shocking him and taking advantage of Koby’s presence, Aokiji was able to deal strong blows to Garp. But why did the former Marine betray his allies?

Why Did Aokiji Betray the Marines?

After Fleet Admiral Sengoku had retired following the Marineford Arc, Aokiji and Akainu had a fierce battle to become the new Admiral. Their fight concluded with Akainu’s victory and Aokiji losing one of his legs.

Disagreeing with Akainu’s iron-fisted policies and rule through fear, Aokiji ended up quitting the Marines. As he wished to live independently without any restraints, he spent his days aimlessly wandering before running into the Blackbeard Pirates.

While his exact goals are yet to be revealed, Aokiji wants to live life on his own terms. He found that the Blackbeard Pirates were searching for Poneglyphs. He decided that traveling with them to Laugh Tale would allow him to step out of his former life following the regulations of the World Government.

Since he was willing to kill Garp and the young Marines, it is safe to say that Aokiji is not acting as a double agent and holds negative feelings towards the Marines. He is also fine with committing nefarious deeds for his personal motivations.

Garp’s Legacy in One Piece

In spite of not appearing frequently, Monkey D. Garp is one of the most prominent figures in One Piece. Having risen to fame for holding back the Rocks Pirates in God Valley, he is a man who could have chosen to become an Admiral but refused multiple times.

Additionally, Garp is also a figure of complexity and moral dilemmas. As seen in the Marineford Arc, he was tied between duty and his role as a Grandfather which caused him to indirectly have a role in Ace’s death. He clearly carries these feelings forward, refusing to give up on any young Marines under him.

Being part of an organization called SWORD which lay outside government red tape, Garp also took steps to inculcate his spirit of freedom inside the Marines.

As a selfless figure whose actions inspire both Marines and Pirates such as Luffy, his values and legacy in One Piece will be eternal.

Conclusion

To conclude, Monkey D. Garp is currently alive and held in captivity by the Blackbeard Pirates. Though his injuries are uncertain, we can assume he still has a significant role to play in One Piece. As a Marine carrying the Will of D, his character will also show the opposing perspective to the Pirates.

Garp’s courage and relentlessness shaped Luffy deeply, highlighting his lasting influence and significance in One Piece.
