Twitch star Imane “Pokimane” is not of Asian descent. She was born and raised in the African country of Morocco until the age of four.
Imane “Pokimane” is a well-known Twitch livestreamer, known for playing a variety of games and hosting Just Chatting streams. Despite spending the majority of her childhood in Canada, the streamer was born in Morocco, a country in Northern Africa. She even stayed there until the age of four, after which she and her parents immigrated to Canada. Pokimane was born on May 14, 1996, and is currently 28 years old.
Pokimane has often been regarded as one of the biggest female livestreamers of all time. She boasts 9.3 million followers on her Twitch channel and 6.62 million subscribers on her YouTube. She also has a significant presence on social media, with 5.8 million followers on Instagram alongside 6.8 million followers on TikTok.
While the 28-year-old’s broadcasts often feature her gaming alone or in collaborations with friends, her YouTube channel is more focused on vlog-based content. These videos allow fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse into Pokimane’s life, including her fitness routine, a tour of her house, event experiences, and other personal updates. She also vlogs about her travels and uploaded a video of her experience visiting her home country of Morocco in 2023.
When Fans Compared Pokimane’s Appearence to Valkyrae’s
Twitch streamer Rachell “Valkyrae” recently commented on fans comparing her appearance with that of Pokimane. This moment occurred during a segment of her broadcast on October 17, 2024, where she was going through submissions made to her official subreddit. Pointing out the differences between their backgrounds as well as the difference in their hair type, Valkyrae said:
“”Dude, I am Asian! I am a German-Filipino girl with also wavy hair. I think Poki actually has curly-curly hair. But this is my natural hair. Okay? I don’t think Poki and I look alike. I do take it as a compliment because she is so beautiful… But it is baffling to me that I think that, truly, just because we’re both streamers, that people are like, ‘Oh, you guys look alike.’ Yeah, Poki is not even Asian! She’s Moroccan! I don’t see it.”
Despite not understanding the basis of the comparison, Valkyrae speculated that it might have emerged from them both being streamers. She also clarified that she took the remarks of the supposed resemblance as a compliment, but joked that such a comparison would be an “insult” to Pokimane, saying:
“It is the highest compliment because she is so f**king pretty. But I don’t think I look like her. It’s also probably because we’re both streamer girls, both brown hair. But yeah, I definitely look more Asian. Like, I am Asian. Y’all are insulting her. Stop insulting the queen! But it is a big compliment. It is weird when people say that. It always catches me off-guard, too.”
