Is Valheim worth your attention in 2025? The answer to this question is a little complex. The game was first released on February 2, 2021, in Early Access. Unfortunately, we haven’t received a full release. But the community is gradually growing despite the fact that the game is still under regular development.

Valheim receives a major update every year and some smaller updates along the way. While this may not be satisfying enough for some gamers, we must note that this suggests that the game is not dead and there is hope for a good future. With that said, let’s see whether the game will be worth your time this year.

Is It Worth Playing Valheim in 2025?

Gameplay Loop

Valheim is a game that lets players dive into a world inspired by Viking lore. Your main task is to explore, survive, gather, fight, and conquer. There is no major story narrative in the game as of now. While this can be disappointing for gamers who are driven by a deep story, it is also a good break from all the story-oriented titles. As a survival-exploration game, Valheim sticks close to the genre and gives it a twist. The “twists” in question are the biomes and the status they can inflict. For example, the player has to resist frost to stay alive in chilly biomes.

Valheim offers several boss fights for the player base to take on. When you think you have defeated all evil in the lands, there is still always room to build and explore the vast world as it is procedurally generated. There are dangers in this world, and you will struggle at first. However, after a few hours, once things around you have calmed down and you know how to tackle certain situations, playing Valheim and grinding for resources can help wind you down after a long day.

Graphics and Artstyle

In my experience, the games that focus on making a survival exploration world tend to focus less and less on realistic graphics and art style. Valheim is no different. The game’s art is not unique. You might have seen some similar artworks in games before. However, it suits the kind of world Valheim aims at building: calming yet dangerous.

To make sure the art style does not negatively stand out, the game’s graphics are intentionally also not as sharp. This means that players won’t get to see many realistic visual details in this survival game. So, if you don’t see the depth of fur on an animal or boss, don’t be disappointed. That’s just not the kind of game this is. If a realistic art style or graphics are something you prioritize, though, then this game may not be worth your time.

The Multiplayer Community

The developers have ensured that Valheim stays just as fun to play alone as it would in co-op. However, you can never have too much co-op if you enjoy playing games with your friends. Although there are ways to adjust difficulty before starting off each new world in Valheim, multiplayer makes the game much easier.

There is also a solution for when you are solo playing this game. There are public servers to join for when you just want to have good co-op fun with random players online. Players can host a server with friends, which allows them to play together. Dedicated servers, however, will come at a price. All of these multiplayer options will let you build, gather, and fight for hours with other players. A growing multiplayer game like Valheim suggests you won’t find the game as repetitive as you would while playing alone.

To sum it up, you can consider playing Valheim if you like survival exploration games but don’t prioritize realistic art style and graphics in a game if the gameplay is fun. There are also options for single-player and multi-player experiences depending on what you feel like playing.
