Discover the captivating world of Vindictus Defying Fate and learn about how players can experience it while adventuring and exploring.

Vindictus Defying Fate is an action RPG with lush, awe-inspiring landscapes framing its adventure. Developed by Nexon, the game’s world is inspired by Celtic mythology, with craggy cliffs and rolling hills dotting the map. The visuals are powered by Unreal Engine 5 and enhance the backdrops influenced by its predecessor, the 2010 MMORPG Vindictus. Defying Fate presents a new interpretation of the original game’s story while shifting its core gameplay away from hack-and-slash and leaning toward Soulslike combat.
The 2010 Vindictus, unlike most of its contemporaries, was not an open-world game. The player would start in a hub town and choose to embark on missions through dungeons. Exploring new areas in the game was contingent upon leveling up through existing missions and unlocking new ones. Vindictus Defying Fate is not an open-world game, but it takes a different approach to map exploration compared to its predecessor.

How Does Map Exploration Work in Vindictus Defying Fate?

Vindictus Defying Fate is not a truly open-world game. Much like its 2010 predecessor, Defying Fate begins in a hub town. From there, the protagonist joins the mercenaries and begins going on missions with them. These missions take the player to various combat locations in the game.
The somewhat open-world element Defying Fate includes the player’s ability to fast travel to any of the available locations. The protagonist does not need to be on a mission to explore an area, but can simply fast travel to a checkpoint on it. However, to unlock the locations, you must progress through the story.
Additionally, the areas are not physically connected to each other on the map, and the only way to move between them is through fast travel. Therefore, the map of Vindictus Defying Fate consists of a hub and disconnected areas that act as combat levels.

All Vindictus Defying Fate Demo Locations

In the alpha demo, you can access three locations within the game. The first one you encounter is the starting town, called Colhen. This is where you go to upgrade your gear, start missions, and interact with characters. Then, the main quest takes you to the Northern Ruins to drive off the Gnolls on behalf of the mercenaries.
Northern Ruins is the first “dungeon” area in the game, with enemies, loot, and bosses. The second such location is called Hoarfrost Hollow, which is an icy network of caves and rocky terrain. There will be more levels to explore once the full game releases.
