AMP content creator Kai Cenat hinted that he is in talks to potentially acquire TikTok following the app’s ban on January 19, 2025.
Twitch streamer Kai Cenat hinted that he is in talks with TikTok for a potential acquisition on January 19, 2025. He tweeted just hours before the app was banned in the United States (US). The app is no longer available for download, but existing American users can still use the app.
The Twitch streamer’s tweet comes just days after YouTuber James “MrBeast” Donaldson said that he is talking to billionaires about a TikTok acquisition. The US government banned the app due to potential security concerns, and its future is uncertain in the US.
If Kai Cenat can acquire the app’s American division, the government might revoke the ban. Other content creators and businesses are also reportedly attempting to purchase the app. TikTok was the most popular app in 2024, with over 825 million downloads on Android and iOS. Over 170 million of those users are from the US and are left without access to the app.
Will Kai Cenat Buy TikTok?
While Kai Cenat hinted at a potential acquisition, it is unknown if the Twitch streamer was serious in his tweet or not. TikTok owner ByteDance previously refused to sell the American side of the app to baseball team owner Frank McCourt. The businessman said that if the ban goes into effect, the app owner might be more open to selling it.
On January 15, 2025, MrBeast said on Twitter:
“Unironically I’ve had so many billionaires reach out to me since I tweeted this, let’s see if we can pull this off.”
Users who lost access to the app are still using the app until updates stop. Many have also migrated to RedNote, which is a TikTok competitor with similar algorithm-based content. The Chinese version of TikTok, officially known as Douyin, is not available in the US and can be accessed only in select regions.
Why Was TikTok Banned in the US?
TikTok was banned in the US because government officials were concerned about the app sharing data with the Chinese government. The US government gave the app a January 19, 2025, deadline to sell its American division to a local company. However, TikTok owner ByteDance is yet to form an agreement.
Many internet users are hopeful that upcoming US President Donald Trump might reverse the decision. He said in an interview with NewsMax:
“I’m not opposed to TikTok. You know, let’s see what happens. I really have to wait to see what happens at the Supreme Court because nobody knows what they can do. Let’s see what they have to say but I had a very good experience with TikTok.”
TikTok is not the only app that was affected by the ban. The popular game Marvel SNAP and social media app Lemon8 were also banned on January 19, 2025, as they are owned by ByteDance.
