Shogi is officially back in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. If you do not know what Shogi is, don’t worry; this guide will help you out. Basically, it is a game similar to chess but with a different set of rules and pieces. The minigame has two different modes in Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. The first one is the normal ranked mode, where you will go up against NPCs in a classic game of Shogi. The other one is a puzzle mode, where you will have to checkmate the opponent in a limited amount of time.

The game might seem intimidating or too complicated for newcomers. That is why we will tell you everything you need to know about minigames in this guide, which will cover the location of the game, the rules, puzzle solutions, and all things Shogi.

To play a round of Shogi, first, you will have to go to the shrine located between Fuji Street and Sakura Street. Behind that shrine, you will find an old man sitting on a blanket. Speak to him to start a game of Shogi.

Shogi Pieces and How They Move

At first, you might get confused because the pieces on the board will be marked with their Japanese names, and most people can’t read Kanji. But don’t worry, the developers thought of this situation, which is why all Shogi pieces have a small letter engraved that matches their English names. For example, a Pawn will have a small “P” in its bottom right corner. With that out of the way, here is a list of all the Shogi pieces and their movement patterns:

PiecesHow They MoveCan be promoted to
