Similarities
At first glance, the obvious similarity between the two games would be the pirate setting. Both games let you take control of a ship and steer across the open sea. Naval exploration and combat are core parts of both games. Additionally, both games give you the option to board enemy ships in a dramatic fashion.
Moreover, both Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii and Assassin’s Creed Black Flag are story-driven games. They contain various side activities you can tackle in the major settlements of the game.
On top of this, you can customize and upgrade your ship in both games. Lastly, you can recruit crew members to help your ship function properly. However, this mechanic works a little differently in both games.
Differences
Though the games look similar on paper, there are a lot of differences when given a deeper look. Firstly, Black Flag takes a more serious approach to its story compared to the jovial tone of the Yakuza series.
Secondly, we have mini-games. The selection of mini-games is very different between Black Flag and Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. This is mostly due to the time periods both games are set. One is set in the 18th century, while the other is set in modern-day Hawaii. Naturally, this leads to both games having different overall settings.
Thirdly, the crew-building aspect of both games is also different. Black Flag focuses on the number of crew members, whereas Pirate Yakuza has dedicated roles each crew member excels. This leads to a deeper level of crew-building, which requires more critical thinking.
Lastly comes the combat. Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii plays out in a beat ’em up style, where you mash buttons to perform various combos and take down waves upon waves of enemies. On the other hand, Black Flag rewards a more methodical approach. You have to plan out your strategy to take down your opponents. The combat styles of both games are vastly different.
