Mario Kart games have a tradition of allowing players to drive through Rainbow Road. Additionally, with Mario Kart World, Nintendo seems to have honored this long tradition. In fact, the version of Rainbow Road in the latest entry to the series is the biggest and most expansive ever. However, you won’t just find the Rainbow Road track automatically. Moreover, you might go through the entire game without ever reaching it.

This time around, Rainbow Road is a secret unlockable, which requires you to fulfill certain specific requirements to finally unlock. In this guide, we’ll discuss how to get Rainbow Road in Mario Kart World.

The game doesn’t tell you that the Rainbow Road track is available, let alone how to unlock it. To get to Rainbow Road and participate in a Special Cup, you will first need to complete the entire Grand Prix series. There are seven Grand Prix cups, each with four tracks within them. You must race in all of these tracks. However, the CC you choose for these races doesn’t matter. Similarly, your placement in these races won’t matter when it comes to unlocking Rainbow Road. The seven Grand Prix cups include:

  • Flower
  • Mushroom
  • Lightning
  • Leaf
  • Banana
  • Shell
  • Star

Once you’ve completed all seven Grand Prix, regardless of whether you placed first or last, a special cutscene will play. It will point you to the location of the Special Cup. One of the tracks within this secret Grand Prix is Rainbow Road. The Rainbow Road track will also become available in free roam, allowing you to practice before opting for the race.

What Happens When You Complete the Special Cup?

Placing first in the Special Cup will not earn you any rewards, even if you choose to do so in the 150cc category. Instead, it will only provide you with free access to four tracks, namely, Acorn Heights, Mario Circuit, Peach Stadium, and Rainbow Road.
