Marques Brownlee, popularly known as MKBHD, posted a video titled WTF Happened in 2024?! on his YouTube channel on December 28, 2024. In the video, the YouTuber is seen recapping 2024 events. Marques briefly addressed his 2024 controversies, including his wallpaper app ‘Panels’ and his infamous speeding video. Brownlee had previously commented on these via his X account.

In September 2024, Marques launched a wallpaper app called Panels. The app offered curated wallpapers through a subscription model. The subscriptions were priced at $11.99 monthly and $49.99 annually. The app faced widespread criticism due to its high cost, the presence of in-app advertisements despite the hefty subscription fee, and privacy concerns regarding data collection. The users also expressed dissatisfaction over AI-generated content on the application.

Marques had addressed the situation in a X post. In the video, Marques has revisited the situation and stated he did not explain the application and treated the launch video as a product review.

“Unfortunately, that was a total misjudgment on my part. I spent way too much time…well, way more time on the product review than actually explaining the app itself, which needed its own explanation. So, people didn’t really understand. I didn’t properly explain the features, what it did, why it existed, or why it even had a premium price tier.”

In November 2024, Brownlee released a video titled How My Video Gear is Changing!, sponsored by DJI. One segment showed Marques driving at 95 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone. Marques received backlash and criticism for the video. The YouTuber later edited out the segment and apologized for his actions. In the recent video, Brownlee revisited the situation and stated:

“I own that responsibility. I’m lucky that nothing went wrong during that test drive. If it had, it would have been my fault, and that would have been horrible. So, I encourage you not to do what I did. I’ve learned several valuable lessons here.”

Other Situations Marques Brownlee Addressed

In his 2024 recap video, MKBHD also addressed the Fisker Ocean video. For those unaware, Marques reviewed the Fisker Ocean electric vehicle in early 2024 on his Auto Focus channel and criticized the vehicle. He labeled it “the worst car I’ve ever reviewed,” citing issues such as software glitches, poor user interface, and subpar driving experience.

In his recent video, Marques stated that after the video blew up on YouTube, he was accused of intentionally sabotaging the Fisker stock prices and eventually killing the company. However, Marques stated that none of it was true and that the video taught him about negative reviews and their impact.

In a similar situation, Marques had reviewed the Humane Pin in April 2024. He labeled it the worst product he had ever reviewed. The product had several issues, including poor performance, frequent errors, and poor usability. In the recap video, Brownlee revisited the review and stated that he stands with what he said in the review video. He also weighed in on the responsibilities of a review video and the weight they carry, referencing a conversation with fellow YouTubers Colin and Samir. The YouTuber also stated that the company fell short of its promises.

“I still stand by everything I said in those reviews, but what I mostly learned was the power that these reviews actually have, which is fascinating. To borrow from a conversation I had earlier with Colin and Samir, the weight of the publish button is heavy.”
