Marvel Rivals added the new First Steps Team-Up ability in the game between The Thing and Human Torch. This is the first Team-Up ability in the game that lets a melee Vanguard fly with the help of another character. The concept of this ability is simple yet impressive. Human Torch can pick up The Thing if the latter is on his team and can then drop him anywhere on the map.

This ability is a reference to a clip from The Fantastic Four: First Steps movie that went viral on social media for the same reasons. Marvel Rivals decided to capitalize on it and turned it into a Team-Up ability, which came to the game on July 24, 2025. It’s called First Steps, as a reference to the MCU film.

If The Thing and Human Torch are both on the same team, one can initiate the lift request by pressing the left joystick on consoles or X on keyboard by default. You can alter this button layout if you wish. When playing as The Thing, look at your Human Torch and press the button prompt. Wait for your Human Torch to accept the Team-Up invite.

If he doesn’t approve, your request marker will vanish after a few seconds, but the ability doesn’t go on cooldown because it wasn’t used yet. On the contrary, if he accepts the Team-Up request, Human Torch will pick you up. The flight will begin facing in the direction that you were facing in as The Thing. So, Human Torch may have to turn around. Once in the sky, you must wait until your Human Torch throws you to the ground.

You will land with a slam, knocking up nearby enemies. The area of effect will apply a grounded effect on the nearby enemies. This means that those affected won’t be able to use any escape abilities, similar to The Thing’s ground slam ability.

When you take Human Torch, make sure somebody on your team has The Thing to activate the First Steps Team-Up in Marvel Rivals. You can initiate the ability by looking at your Thing and pressing the prompted button (left stick on controllers and X on keyboard by default). This will trigger a request with an icon. The Thing can look at you and press the prompted button to accept the Team-Up request. Contrastingly, you can also accept his request by pressing the same button if he initiates it first.

Once the request has been approved by either hero, your flight will begin. It will start by facing the direction in which The Thing was facing. So, you may have to re-manuever yourself. You will then have 8 seconds to drop The Thing. To drop him, look at the ground and press the prompted button, which is R2/RT on the controller. You can also cancel the Team-Up mid-flight as Human Torch by pressing the Team-Up ability button again.
