Marvel Rivals’ Groot is a Vanguard hero that can summon walls that block enemy attacks and create choke points that allies can capitalize on. He also has huge play potential with his Ultimate, which can pull enemies and prevent them from escaping. Groot is a crucial hero in a team as he has the potential to control the outcome of a fight.

On top of being a good frontline Vanguard, he can also buff allies, granting them bonus health. The floral colossus is self-sufficient compared to most Vanguards in the game. However, it is still better to have a healer in your team.

This guide will explain how to play Groot in Marvel Rivals. We’ll also discuss other aspects such as his abilities, combos, and counters, as well as a few tips and tricks below.

All Abilities of Groot in Marvel Rivals

Groot is a heavy tank Vanguard that offers a ton of control effects for the team. As a Vanguard, he does lack mobility but the walls and health buffs make him a decent damage sponge. Overall, he works best against slow enemies that can be easily targeted or ambushed.

Here’s a quick rundown of his abilities in the game.

AbilitiesDescription
Vine Strike (LMB)Launch vines that attack enemies.
Spore Bomb (RMB)Throw an explosive Spore Bomb that splits into multiple small spores and damage enemies.

How To Play Groot in Marvel Rivals

Mobility of Groot

Groot in Marvel Rivals is quite easy to play. While he can be slow at times, playing as the extraterrestrial sentient tree is fun and rewarding. He does have high defensive stats and utility to keep him alive in the fight despite having little to no mobility.

Just like most Vanguards, you will need to stick close to your allies at all times. You can support them, and in return, they can support you as well.

Survivability of Groot

The utility of Groot in Marvel Rivals is exceptional. However, it requires him to be close to his walls to be effective. It’s a double-edged sword. You can’t do much alone. Having teammates on your side is crucial as you will be the one starting or breaking fights.

He is a pretty straightforward Vanguard who’s tanky and hard to take down. The problem is, he can’t do anything against high-mobility heroes or those who can fly.

Groot Playstyle and Combos

Always try to be the center of attention. Your team is more likely to win if the enemy throws all their attacks on you. Don’t forget that the walls you summon get awakened. Always try to stick near to your walls to maximize their effectiveness.

When a fight is about to start, try and aim your Strangling Prison to hit the most important hero on the enemy side. These are usually high-mobility Strategists or Duelists. You can also let your team know who you are going to focus on so they can follow up.

Best Team Compositions With Groot in Marvel Rivals

The obvious candidates for the best team compositions with Groot in Marvel Rivals are Jeff the Land Shark and Rocket Racoon. These two have Team-Up ability with Groot, allowing them to ride on his shoulders. They get a Damage Reduction buff while doing this.

While this is cool and all, it’s not really a viable strategy. You don’t send your Strategists in the middle of a fight. They get knocked off Groot’s shoulders when they receive crowd control effects. If they get focused by the enemy, you are left with no healer to support your lack of mobility.

A three-way Team-Up ability with Groot, Rocket Racoon, and The Punisher is also good. Rocket Racoon can ride Groot, gaining damage reduction. The Punisher grants Rocket Racoon the Infinite Punishment Team-Up ability to gain infinite ammo and a faster fire rate.

Other heroes that can work well with Groot are Namor and Hela as these heroes work well when they are given enough space to hit their targets.

Groot Counters in Marvel Rivals

One of the good Groot Counters in Marvel Rivals is Iron Man. As mentioned before, the floral colossus can’t do anything against enemies who can fly or move fast. Iron Man can easily keep his distance while bombarding him with attacks.

Punisher is also a good counter as his Culling Turret ability can easily melt down the walls placed by Groot.

Here are a few tips and tricks you can use when playing Groot in Marvel Rivals:

  • Maximize the potential of your walls by either blocking enemies or preventing their escape. Don’t just spam Flora Colossus.
  • As a Vanguard, communication is key. You can’t engage an enemy while your teammates are busy doing other stuff and are ignoring you.
  • Don’t go solo. You don’t deal much damage and will likely just get in trouble if you don’t stick to your allies.
