Facing off against The Sorrow in Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced, especially if you haven’t played the original. He is one of the bosses you encounter, and things can play out drastically differently during the faceoff depending on your choices in the game until then.

So, as a new player, if you’ve been trigger-happy and killed as many enemies as you could, you’re in for a rude awakening during this boss fight. The following guide explores how you can defeat The Sorrow and how your choices shape this boss battle.

The Sorrow is one of the Cobra bosses you’ll come across during the game. His real name is David Thomas, and you will encounter him in a swamp. After the cutscene, the battle begins. Besides unleashing attacks himself, he will also raise the spirits of the enemy combatants you killed before. So, if you were violent throughout the game until that point, you will have scores of enemy spirits to avoid.

On the other hand, if you managed to get past most enemies peacefully using stealth, this fight becomes much easier, as you mostly have to contend with The Sorrow. Remember that getting through the game without killing anyone isn’t just beneficial here but also earns you the Peace Walker trophy. But getting back to the topic at hand, there are two ways to get through this fight.

Follow the Sorrow to the River’s End

You simply have to keep following The Sorrow as he moves toward the end of the river. While doing so, you’ll need to avoid the shots fired by the boss. Also, depending on how you’ve played the game thus far, you may or may not need to avoid the spirits of all the soldiers you killed. That choice will determine the difficulty of this boss fight. If you haven’t killed anyone or simply killed a couple of soldiers, the task at hand is much simpler.

However, if you’ve been especially violent, the spirits can easily overwhelm you, making it incredibly difficult to reach the river’s end. Still, it’s highly worthwhile to do so.

When you reach the river’s end, The Sorrow will kill Snake. However, you can take the revival pill to return from death. If you manage to do this, you will get your hands on the camo suit from The Sorrow. This item makes Snake completely silent, which makes future stealth sections much easier to get through.

Drown Yourself

It may sound weird, but this is a legitimate option to progress through this section of the game. We recommend it to players who have taken the lethal route up until this point. In this method, when you feel there are simply too many spirits coming toward you, you can let Snake drown in the river without following The Sorrow. Once he dies, hold left on the D-pad to open the items menu and choose the revival pill. The boss fight ends when Snake wakes up. However, you won’t get the camo suit if you complete the encounter this way.
