Everything you need to know about the 9 Star monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds and how they compare to the Arch-tempered variants.
The new 9 Star monsters are a great addition to Monster Hunter Wilds and something that the game desperately needed to bolster the endgame. While these aren’t as exciting as new Title Update monsters, the 9 Star monster does offer plenty of reasons to jump back into the game. The biggest draw for the 9 Star monsters is the new Glowing Stones, which you obtain upon completing an Investigation. The Glowing Stones are appraisal items that follow a similar RNG system as Decorations, albeit for Talismans. However, the Talismans you get from these quests are significantly more powerful than anything you can craft using monster parts.
Considering the rewards on offer, you would think the 9 Star monsters are significantly tougher than their regular counterparts. However, that’s not the case. While there are differences between 8 Star Apex Monsters and their 9 Star variants, they aren’t as pronounced as in the case of Arch-tempered. Here’s how 9 Star monsters stack up against Arch-tempered monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds.
What Are the Key Differences Between 9 Star and Arch-Tempered Monsters?
For the most part, 9 Star monsters are basically identical to their 8 Star versions. They follow the same Tempered Wound mechanic, as well as have a larger health pool and higher defense. However, the core movesets are identical. Unlike the Arch-tempered monsters, 9 Star monsters don’t get access to any new attacks or “one-shot” gimmicks. However, similarly to Arch-tempered Apex Monsters, 9 Star monsters are incredibly resistant to flinching and wounds. Even if you destroy a wound, the monsters aren’t staggered for long. Additionally, the 9 Star monsters have higher resistance to elemental affinities than 8 Star or even Arch-tempered monsters.
That said, the 9 Star monsters are still very easy to wound and stagger if you know how to exploit their weaknesses. It should be noted that 9 Star monsters are only available for Tempered variants. Furthermore, 9 Star Investigations only include monsters with 4 star and 5 star strengths. There’s no 3-star Strength 9 Star Investigation. As such, in terms of difficulty, 9 Star Apex Monsters are on par with their Arch-tempered variants. The only upper hand Arch-tempered Monsters have is their unique attacks, which can often one-shot Hunters.
Is It Worth Hunting the 9 Star Monsters?
Absolutely. If you’re already in the endgame and are looking forward to min-maxing your builds to their extreme, the 9 Star Investigations are a no-brainer. The RNG Talismans you obtain upon completing these Investigations offer substantial buffs in the form of additional Skills and Decoration slots.
Furthermore, the 9 Star monsters are incredibly fun to hunt and offer a feeling that’s very much reminiscent of past Monster Hunter games. Hunting the 9 Star Monsters is also a great way to prepare for all future content in Monster Hunter Wilds, including the inevitable Master or G Rank expansion.
