Gypceros is easily one of the most cunning monsters you will face in Monster Hunter Wilds. It’s a returning monster that last appeared in Monster Hunter Generations before being put on hiatus for the subsequent mainline titles. Although Gypceros isn’t a particularly challenging monster, it certainly isn’t something that should be taken lightly, especially if you’re new to Monster Hunter.
With the release of the second Open Beta for Monster Hunter Wilds, Capcom has added two new monsters for players to fight. One of them is the aforementioned Bird Wyvern, Gypceros. Surprisingly enough, for its return in the modern era of Monster Hunter, Capcom has kept roughly all of Gypceros’ moves from the past games.
Much like other Bird Wyverns in the series, Gypceros is incredibly agile and has access to elemental abilities. In addition to that, Gypceros has a few extra tricks up its sleeves, that it doesn’t shy away from using. Here’s everything you need to know about Gypceros in Monster Hunter Wiods, including tips on how to easily defeat it in the Open Beta.
What Is Gypceros in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Introduced in the original Monster Hunter (2004), Gypceros is a Bird Wyvern with the ability to inflict Poison damage. Much like Kulu-Ya-Ku, Yian Garuga, and Tzitzi-Ya-Ku, Gypceros is a bipedal monster that relies on its agility and elemental abilities to overpower the Hunter. Furthermore, the Gypceros, much like Tzitzi Ya-Ku, can inflict “stun” on the Hunter using its horns.
The monster has a special appendage on its head that can clash together to cause a blinding flash of light. Standing within the monster’s effective range during its “flashing” animation will result in the Hunter getting stunned. This leaves the Hunter vulnerable to the monster’s follow-up attack.
In addition to that, Gypceros can also inflict its prey and Hunters with Poison. It can spit poison up in the air which then rains down in a wide vicinity creating temporary poison pools. Standing in these pools will result in the Hunter getting poisoned almost instantly.
Gypceros also has a retractable tail which it uses to attack and catch its prey. Lastly, it also has the ability to mimic dying when it gets close to death. If a Hunter gets close to the monster to attempt carving, Gypceros quickly retaliates with either a stun or Poison attack.
How To Beat Gypceros in Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta?

Although Gypceros has plenty of moves that can catch players off-guard, it’s a fairly easy-to-defeat monster, even in the Open Beta. The trick to defeating Gypceros lies in two things – proper positioning and Focus Strikes.
Being a Bird Wyvern, Gypceros is incredibly prone to flinching. Furthermore, if you manage to break the Gypceros’ head and its hind legs, you can basically immobilize it, making the battle significantly easier. Here are some tips that should help easily beat Gypceros in Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta:
- Use heavy weapons against Gypceros. Since the monster is prone to flinching, you can capitalize on its weakness by using heavier weapons. Great Sword, Hammer, and the Hunting Horn are incredibly effective against Gypceros. Hammer is especially more effective as it lets you easily break Gypceros’ head, which compromises the monster’s ability to inflict stun.
- Do not spam attacks. Instead, commit to a single combo per attack. Always keep an eye on the monster. If you see Gypceros trying to initiate a “flash” attack, sheath your weapon and prepare to do a “superman dive.” The superman dive can be performed by pressing the jump/crouch button while sprinting. This negates the stun effect, while also giving you free invincibility frames.
- Focus your attacks on the head. You can also try to sever Gypceros’ tail, but given its retractable nature, it can be somewhat difficult to do. Instead, focus your attacks on breaking the head as early as possible, and then commit to attacking its legs. Make sure to use Focus Strikes periodically to damage wounds and also deal additional stagger damage to the monster.
- Make use of the SOS feature. If you’re having too much trouble with Gypceros, you can always call the Support Hunters for help. NPC Hunters in Monster Hunter Wilds are incredibly effective at diverting aggression away from the player. This allows you to not only heal but also get in some easy attacks on the monster’s head and wounds.
