Gypceros has been a part of Monster Hunter games since the very first entry in the series. So, if you’re a long-term hunter, you’ll probably already be familiar with this beast. The monster has a variety of attacks in its repertoire, but the poison it spits can do the most damage to the hunter if you’re not careful enough. During the battle, you’ll need to be smart and maneuver around the poison attacks. Also, you’ll need to take advantage of its weak points and weaknesses.

How To Unlock Gypceros in Monster Hunter Wilds

Your first encounter with the Gypceros will be through a side quest in the Windward Plains, dubbed “Beware the Gypceros.” To unlock this mission, find and speak to Zatoh at the base camp in this region. Keep in mind that the quest is only available in High Rank, and you will need to reach a high Hunter Rank (around Level 10) to even attempt this quest.

You can also fight the Gypceros through another optional quest in the game titled “Mysterious Poison.” In it, you’ll need to eventually go on a hunt for the Wyvern monster.

Where To Find Gypceros in Monster Hunter Wilds

You can find Gypceros across different regions of the game, including the Iceshard Cliffs, Windward Plains, Oilwell Basin, and the Ruins of Wyveria.

Possible Turf Wars for Gypceros

In High Rank, the monster can engage in turf wars with the following monsters:

  • Nerscylla
  • Rey Dau
  • Arkveld

Gypceros Weaknesses

If you’re planning to take advantage of elemental attacks, we highly recommend using Fire and Ice. The monster takes more damage from these elements. It’s better to steer clear of Thunder attacks because Gypceros’s rubber-like skin provides extensive protection against this type of damage.

Now, coming to the status ailments that are most effective against the beast, we’d say avoid poison attacks completely. Apart from that, all other status ailments, such as Paralysis, Sleep, Stun, Blastblight, and Exhaust, are quite effective against the monster during the battle.

Gypceros Elemental Weaknesses

  • Fire
  • Ice

Gypceros Status Weaknesses

  • Stun
  • Sleep
  • Paralysis
  • Blastblight

Make sure you avoid Thunder-based weapons or Thunder elemental attacks during the fight. These attacks won’t help chip away at the monster’s health and can elongate the battle unnecessarily.

Gypceros Weak Points

The weakest point of Gypceros in Monster Hunter Wilds is its head region. Its head is breakable, so you should focus all your initial attacks on this part. Once the head breaks, Gypceros won’t be able to use its flash ability. This will make the fight much easier, especially if your hunter doesn’t have decent stun resistance. Beyond the head, you can also target its left and right wings for increased damage.

Best Weapons for Gypceros in Monster Hunter Wilds

It can be difficult to exploit the weak point on Gypceros’s head using close-range weapons, such as Long Swords. That’s why you need to prioritize ranged weapons for this battle. With these, you can target the weak point perfectly and gain the upper hand in the battle. You should also utilize weapons that have Fire damage to wreck the beast quickly.

Here are some weapons that you can consider using:

  • Gun Lance
  • Bow Gun
  • Bows
  • Broad Sword

Items To Carry for the Battle

You should have plenty of the following items when going into a fight with Gypceros:

  • Health potions
  • Mega health potions
  • Watermoss
  • Herbal medicine
  • Antidotes
  • Pitfall traps

By far, the most devastating of Gypceros’s attacks is using the flash on its head. If you don’t have enough stun resistance, you’ll be rendered motionless after this attack. Without the ability to move around, you won’t be able to get out of the way of its incoming brutal attack that follows the flash discharge. That’s why we suggest going after its breakable head from the get-go. Don’t allow the monster to gain the upper hand. Unleash a flurry of Fire attacks on its head region, dealing extensive damage.

Another challenging thing during the battle is the inability to maneuver the battlefield as you need to due to the poison puddles that Gypceros creates. These will appear all over the ground, and you’ll take poison damage if you come into contact with them. Using your sling to shoot Watermoss at them is a wise idea in this scenario, as the item clears these poisonous puddles. You can find Watermoss in the areas where the fight occurs. Also, if you’re afflicted by its poison, make sure to use antidotes as soon as you can.

Apart from its stun and poison abilities, you also need to watch out for its physical attacks. Its tail can slash at you if you try to attack Gypceros from behind. Similarly, when you’re in front of the beast, it can peck down on the ground and inflict severe damage if you’re not careful. Also, be wary of its slam attack, especially after it stuns you with the flash.

As with all encounters in the game, wounds will appear on various parts of Gypceros’s body as the fight progresses. Make sure you use Focus Mode to attack these areas for bonus damage.

Tips To Defeat Gyceros

  • Use Fire-based weapons or attacks on the monster’s head, right wing, and left wing. For its front legs, switch to Ice-based attacks, as these cause more damage compared to Fire types.
  • If you are willing to take advantage of traps during the battle, make sure you only place Pitfall Traps since all other kinds are ineffective against the beast.
  • Before destroying Gypceros’s head, whenever you see the monster prepare its flash attack, you should take cover to prevent being stunned.
  • The monster has a minor wind pressure special attack. You can counter this effect by arming yourself with equipment that adds to your Windproof skill. Even at Level 1 of the skill, it negates all effects from minor wind pressure attacks.
