In this guide, we shall go over how to beat the Rathian in Monster Hunter Wilds and shall discuss its weaknesses and rewards.

Rathian is one of the most imposing monsters in the Monster Hunter series, having made its debut in the original Monster Hunter. Now, this legacy monster makes its return in Monster Hunter Wilds, and boy, is it an absolute joy to fight. This monster is aggressive, hits hard, and retains some of the behavioral patterns we’ve come to expect from it over the course of the series.
As strong as Rathian is, it is predictable and not without openings and weaknesses to exploit. If you’re struggling against this boss’ frantic pace and fighting style, we’re here to help you deal with it. In this guide, we shall go over how to beat Rathian in Monster Hunter Wilds. We shall discuss in detail the monster’s weaknesses, how to find it, as well as the rewards you’ll obtain at the end of your fight.
Rathian Overview
Rathian is a Flying Wyvern that resides in the Scarlet Forest, Windward Plains, and Oilwell Basin regions of Monster Hunter Wilds. This Flying Wyvern is a tough boss as it uses a mix of physical and Fire-type damage that can eat away at your HP with ease.
This boss is deceptively fast for its size, too, and gives little to no room to react. You have to be quick on your toes and watch for the cues to dodge its attacks.Furthermore, since the boss uses a lot of fire-type attacks, you have to be wary of the possibility of Fireblight. Hence, it is wise to be stocked up on Nulberries before you head out for the hunt.
The Rathian has quite a few weaknesses you can exploit. This creature is vulnerable to Thunder and Dragon-type elemental damage. It is also vulnerable to various status effects such as Poison, Sleep, Paralysis, and much more.

How To Unlock Rathian in Monster Hunter Wilds
You unlock Rathian after running through and completing the main story and Chapter 3 of Monster Hunter Wilds. Complete the chapter, and the game’s credits will roll, pushing you on to Chapter 4-1. Once you’re at this point, head on over to the Scarlet Forest, Windward Plains, and Oilwell Basin regions to find Rathian out in the wild.
Where To Find Rathian
As stated earlier, you will find the Rathian in the Scarlet Forest, Windward Plains, and Oilwell Basin regions of Monster Hunter Wilds. However, you first need to complete the Monster Hunter Wilds main story. You complete the main story by playing through and completing Chapter 3 in the main game, after which you will roll the credits. Once you’re on the next chapter, Chapter 4-1, you can head to any of the aforementioned regions and find Rathian to hunt.
Rathian Weaknesses
While Rathian is aggressive and hits hard, he can easily be dealt with by exploiting his weaknesses. The monster has openings to exploit after each of his moves, giving you a fighting chance. Rathian is also vulnerable to Thunder and Dragon-type elemental damage, giving you the opportunity to deal these respective elemental damages and amplify your overall damage.
Bringing in weapons that specialize in these elemental damages is your key to defeating the Flying Wyvern. Rathian also has multiple weak spots on its body that you can target. These weak spots include its mouth, wings, tail, and legs. Target any of these body parts with the right weapons, and you’ll be done with the boss in no time.

Rathian Weak Points
As stated earlier, the Flying Wyvern has multiple weak points on its body, ripe for you to target and exploit. These weak points include its mouth, wings, tail, and legs. The head is the weakest part, vulnerable to Sever, Blunt, and Shot damage in equal measures. The head is also relatively the smallest of the weak points, so being precise with your attacks is a must. After the head, the tail is your next best target and is most vulnerable to Sever and Blunt damage. Focus your attacks on the head and tail, and then slay the creature.
Best Weapons for Rathian in Monster Hunter Wilds
Rathian moves around too much and too often. This gives you very few openings, so you have to make each opening count. Therefore, we suggest bringing in a greatsword for the job to land hard hits one at a time, chipping away at the HP. Since Rathian is vulnerable to Thunder and Dragon-type damage, we recommend bringing in the Smiting Fulgur I or the Fulgurcleaver Guardiana for Thunder-type damage. The Veldian Gladius I or the Stalwart Lamorak would be our recommended picks for Dragon-type damage.
Items To Carry for the Battle

How To Beat Rathian in MH Wilds

As stated earlier, Rathian hits hard and often but always gives a blatant cue for its attacks. Our strategy is simple: wait for the cues, evade the attack, and then use the opportunity to land one hard hit before repeating the pattern. Since we’re only going to be landing a few hits at a time, we want to target the weak spots and ensure we’re dealing elemental damage to amplify the damage dealt.
Now, Rathian has quite a diverse arsenal of attacks that you need to be wary of. The first and most common of these attacks is the fireball spit. The Wyvern will charge up its flames before aiming at you and firing away. The creature raises its head in a semicircular movement to charge up this attack. Wait for this cue and move away to dodge the flames. You can use this chance to move to a side and land a hit on its head.
Choose to move to its back and strike the tail, however, and you may want to watch out for a tail sweep. The creature will glance back before it uses the sweep, so you’ll have to keep a glance at its head to watch for the cue. After you evade and have distanced yourself, the creature may charge right at you. This dash has no cue but is fairly slow and easy to dodge.
Whenever Rathian takes to the air, you need to watch out for the tail swipe. In this attack, the Flying Wyvern does a flip, using its tail to launch you into the air and deal massive damage. In addition to this, the monster has one last powerful attack up its sleeve – the charged fireball. The Wyvern charges up its flames and spits out a massive fireball. Watch out for a white aura and clear out immediately.
Tips To Defeat Rathian
- Rathian uses a mix of fire-based attacks and physical strikes. The former is capable of inflicting Fireblight, so carry as many Nulberries as you can to cure the status effect. If you run short of the item in the midst of battle, spam the dodge roll button to negate the effect.
- Use items such as the Flash Pods, the Shock Traps, or the Pitfall Traps to increase your odds of winning.
- The monster is weak to Thunder and Dragon-type weapons. Make sure you’re armed with the right weapons before you head to battle.
- The monster gives you openings towards the end of each attack. Make sure to exploit the openings and be precise with your attacks.
