Uth Duna is a giant monster that you meet during the opening chapter of MH Wilds. Facing the leviathan without prior knowledge of its attack patterns and weaknesses can make the fight even more difficult. So, to ensure your preparedness, we have created the following detailed guide related to the boss fight.
We’ll familiarize you with the monster’s weak points, tell you about the most effective weapons and much more when battling Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Uth Duna Overview
Uth Duna is a massive monster, the apex predator in the Scarlet Forest region of the game’s map. It relies on water-based attacks and damage when fighting against the Hunter. The monster mainly makes its appearance during the Downpour inclemency in the region. It secretes a special substance, which when combined with the surrounding water creates a hard shell. This protective covering can stop many of your attacks and keep the beast protected for longer.
How To Unlock Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds
You will first encounter Uth Duna during the ‘Beyond the Deluge’ story mission in Chapter 1 of the game. Once unlocked, you’ll be able to defeat it multiple times through various other quests too.
Where To Find Uth Duna
Uth Duna exists solely in the Scarlet Forest region of the game. Keep an eye out for a small pop-up on the right side of the screen when you’re in this area. This pop-up will notify you whenever the Uth Duna is available for you to challenge. You can find the beast in various areas of the Scarlet Forest, but it’s most commonly found in area 12.

In Low Rank, Uth Duna can have turf wars with the following:
- Congalala
- Lala Barina
- Rathian
- Rathalos
In High Rank, the monster can engage in turf wars with the following:

Uth Duna Weaknesses
The best strategy would be to use the Thunder elemental attacks when taking on Uth Duna. All other elemental attack types don’t fare as well as thunder attacks do. Also, when it comes to status ailments, all of the available ailments, except Stun, are decently effective. So, you can try to invoke Paralysis, Blastblight, Sleep or Exhaust on the beast.

Don’t try to Stun the monster because it won’t be as effective as the other ailments. Similarly, attacking Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds with water-based attacks or weapons would be pretty useless.
Uth Duna Weak Points
There are four primary weak points that you can target when fighting this beast. Its general weak point is the Mouth. Then, there are three additional weak points that you can break.
The first one is its Head. The other two include its tail and forelegs. You can only break one of its forelegs. We suggest using Focus Mode to attack its head and forelegs with your thunder-based attacks. Although the mouth is its weakest point, reaching it can be tricky and may put you in harm’s way.
Best Weapons for Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds
Uth Duna takes more damage from bludgeoning and slashing weapon types, so keep this in mind when choosing your gear for this fight. So, the best options would be to go with Hammers, Insect Glaive, and Long Sword for this fight. These weapons can help you to smash down on the monster’s weaker points and break them.

Items To Carry for the Battle
Weapons alone will not allow you to best Uth Duna. You also need to carry the following items to make the battle easier:
- Nulberry
- Shock traps
- Pitfall traps
- Health potions
- Mega health potions
How To Beat Uth Duna in MH Wilds
When you finally head into this battle, make sure you flank the monster to avoid its devastating slam attack. Keep focusing on the front of its body, because most of its weak points are there. Watch out for its Waterblight inducing attacks. If you get hit, you can either roll continuously to get rid of the status ailment or consume Nulberries.
Initially, Uth Duna’s body will be covered by a special Veil, which will reduce the damage from your attacks. You can break through this outer shell to increase your damage further.
However, keep in mind that with the Veil gone, the monster is much quicker and more aggressive. So, think about the pros and cons before deciding whether to target the protective barrier or not. Also, during many parts of the fight, you can use your claw to pull down the crumbling ruins hanging overhead. These will drop on the monster and cause quite a bit of damage.
Whether you are attacking from the front or from its rear, the monster has devastating physical attacks that can knock you down if you aren’t careful. Besides Waterblight, the monster has a weak roar special attack that can immobilize you. The easiest way to counteract this would be to equip Earplugs during the battle.
Focus on breaking the weak points we mentioned in the guide. Also, take advantage of any wounds that appear on the monster, by attacking these areas. Destroying wounds is a great way to inflict some bonus damage.

Tips To Defeat Uth Duna
- If you are a melee-based Hunter, make sure that you stay behind Uth Duna and attack its Tail region.
- Deploy Pitfall traps and Shock traps strategically to maximize the damage to the enemy on top on your Thunder-based attacks.
- When the Veil is up, you should ride on your Seikret to attack the monster. This is the easiest way to attack and move out of the way to avoid incoming damage. After the Veil is gone, you can unleash powerful attacks on foot.
- You can use Wedge Beetles to evade the wave attacks that the monster is known to unleash from time to time.
