Everything you need to know about Pictomancy in Monster Hunter Wilds, including how to use it, best use cases, and more.

Pictomancy is one of the coolest new additions to Monster Hunter Wilds, courtesy of Title Update 3 (TU3). It’s essentially a new way of dealing active damage to monsters, without having to sacrifice your existing playstyle. Think of it like the Akuma skills, albeit without the restrictions of a Layered Armor. However, since it’s a new mechanic in Monster Hunter and one that’s carried over from Final Fantasy 14, Pictomancy can be a tad confusing for some players. While the game does explain how to use Pictomancy, it only touches on the basics.
Surprisingly enough, Pictomancy can be an incredibly powerful tool, granted you use it correctly. Here’s everything you need to know about Pictomancy in Monster Hunter Wilds, and how to use it.

Pictomancy in Monster Hunter Wilds, Explained

While the Title Update 3’s trailer makes Pictomancy look like a “Job” akin to its Final Fantasy 14 counterpart, it’s actually just a tool. Pictomancy isn’t locked behind a specific weapon type or build. You can use it on any build, as long as you have enough space on your Quick Access Tool Belt. Furthermore, you can also access the Pictomancy spells via the Radial Menu. Also, since it’s technically a “Tool,” you can use skills like Tool Master to boost the cooldown speed for Pictomancy spells.
Talking about spells, Pictomancy comes with three spells – Pom Motif, Wing Motif, and Mog of the Ages. All these spells can be cast once you have access to Soul of the Pictomancer. Furthermore, you can also use Pictomancy to inflict wounds on monsters (which comes very handy against Omega Planetes).
How To Use Pictomancy

To use Pictomancy, you need to have the Soul of the Pictomancer equipped in your Tool Belt. As for getting the Soul of the Pictomancer, that comes from the newly added The Artifact’s Words quest. It’s an HR 41 quest, where you need to defeat a Nerscylla (clone). After completing the quest, the Soul of the Pictomancer will be added to your Inventory. Once you equip Soul of the Pictomancer, you can start casting spells. However, you do need to be mindful of the cooldown.
Every time you use Pictomancy, you start with Pom Motif. After casting Pom Motif, you need to wait for a 25-second cooldown before you can cast Wing Motif. And after casting Wing Motif, you need to wait another 25 seconds before you’re able to cast Mog of the Ages. You cannot choose a specific spell at any given time.
It always has to be Pom Motif > Wing Motif > Mog of the Ages. However, at the start of a quest, you can simply use Pom and Wing Motifs and get Mog of the Ages on cooldown. That way, you can use Mog of the Ages right at the start of a hunt. It’s a little inconvenient, but it lets you start a hunt with the most powerful Pictomancy spell.
