Monster Hunter Wilds has a dynamic combat system that takes a lot of factors into account. This has remained the same for all the games in the franchise, and you need to keep a lot of other elements in mind at all times. Weapon Sharpness is a crucial factor that determines the damage multiplier of your attacks. Every successful hit chips away the weapon’s sharpness, and you need to maintain it at a certain level to ensure proper damage.

Your normal combat routine will also include the usage of Whetstone very frequently to increase your weapon’s sharpness amid a fight. In this article, we will explain how weapon sharpness works in Monster Hunter Wilds. Each sharpness level is denoted by a specific color, and this article will shed light on all of it.

Your weapon’s sharpness level is denoted by a special bar on the top-left section of your screen in Monster Hunter Wilds. Currently, there are six weapon sharpness levels in the game.

Each level is a different color and has different damage multipliers for elemental and raw damages. Higher sharpness means higher damage multipliers, and you get to deal more damage with them.

How Does Weapon Sharpness Decay in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Your weapon sharpness in Monster Hunter Wilds decays by the following methods:

  • Weapon hits
  • Guarding
  • Shelling

Every hit from your weapon takes away some sharpness from it. As such, weapons like Dual Blades that are faster and rely on a larger number of hits takes away your sharpness much faster. Other than hitting, some other actions like Guards, Perfect Guards, or even Shelling (for Gunlance) decays your sharpness.

Your primary goal should be to ensure that your damage multiplier does not go in the negative zone. By that, we mean the multiplier should not go below 1. Generally, it is okay to use your weapon as long as the sharpness color is Green or above. Once it drops to Yellow, you should prioritize regaining your weapon’s sharpness; otherwise, you deal much less damage overall.

How To Regain Weapon Sharpness in Monster Hunter Wilds?

You can use the Whetstone to regain your weapon’s sharpness in Monster Hunter Wilds. The Whetstone is automatically equipped in your Radial menu. Based on how low your sharpness is, you might have to use the Whetstone more than once to regain maximum sharpness value.

Sharpening your weapon generally makes you immobile and vulnerable. As such, you should try to use the Whetstone while on your Seikret. This allows you to be on the move while sharpening, making it much safer. Note that weapons with higher rarity (or tiers) will have more sharpness levels as compared to the ones that you get at the lower levels.
