Learn about the character of Kitana in Mortal Kombat and the lore she has accumulated over the years as part of the franchise.

Kitana may not have been here from the start of the Mortal Kombat series, but she remains one of the franchise’s leading ladies. Kitana is the adopted daughter of the series’ antagonist Shao Kahn and the love interest of the main protagonist, Liu Kang. Let’s learn more about her in this article.
Kitana’s History in Mortal Kombat

Kitana in the Original Timeline
Kitana made her debut in Mortal Kombat II. She was one of Outworld ruler Shao Kahn’s personal assassins as well as his adopted daughter. However, in Mortal Kombat 3, she learns that she is the daughter of King Jarrod and Queen Sindel of Edenia. The former of the two was killed by Shao Kahn, and the latter took her own life rather than serve as the Outworld ruler’s queen.
Additionally, her “sister,” Mileena, was a clone created by Shang Tsung under Shao Kahn’s orders. As a result, Kitana alerts Earthrealm’s warriors to Shao Kahn’s invasion in Mortal Kombat 3. She was able to free her resurrected mother, Sindel, from Shao’s control. Thanks to her actions, Edenia became a separate realm from Outworld once more.
Kitana aids Earthrealm’s heroes against Shinnok in Mortal Kombat 4. After which, she offers Liu Kang to join her to rule Edenia by her side, but he declines owing to his duties as Earth’s champion. Sadly, this would be the last time the two would have a chance to be together in this timeline.
Liu Kang is killed by Shang Tsung and Quan-Chi in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. Kitana leads a bunch of Earthrealm warriors against them, but they all end up dying. She ends up a mind-controlled pawn of the Dragon King Onaga in Mortal Kombat Deception. However, Liu Kang’s spirit, with the help of Ermac, was able to free her and his former allies.
Kitana in Mortal Kombat (2011)

While Kitana is part of the first tournament in the reboot, her role is mostly similar to what happens in Mortal Kombat 3. However, she is one of the victims of her mother Sindel’s attack and dies in Liu Kang’s arms. She is resurrected as a revenant under Quan-Chi.
She remains allied with Quan-Chi for the rest of this timeline, even becoming a ruler of the Netherrealm in Mortal Kombat X alongside an undead Liu Kang. Along with the other revenants, she joins Kronika in Mortal Kombat 11. However, as part of the goddess’ machinations, a Kitana from the past ends up in the present. This Kitana ends up uniting the various factions of Outworld and defeats a returned Shao Kahn, earning the title Kitana Kahn. She leads Outworld’s forces in the final battle against Kronika.
Kitana in Mortal Kombat 1

In the new timeline, Kitana is the younger biological sister of Mileena. Both are princesses to Queen Sindel of Outworld; however, with Mileena suffering from Tarkat disease, there has been a push for Kitana to become queen after Sindel instead. However, in the game’s ending, she becomes the loyal general to Mileena instead.
