Learn about the character of Scorpion in Mortal Kombat and the lore he has accumulated over the years as part of the franchise.

While Liu Kang may be the protagonist of the Mortal Kombat games, Scorpion is the mascot of the series. Starting off as an antagonist looking for revenge for the massacre of his clan, the Shirai Ryu, each game in the series has added further depth to his character. So, let’s see what makes Scorpion such a compelling character to fans.
Scorpion’s History in Mortal Kombat
Scorpion in the Original Timeline

Scorpion’s real name is Hanzo Hasashi. He would join and become the leader of the Shirai Ryu clan of assassins. However, he and his entire clan were exterminated, seemingly at the hands of the first Sub-Zero Bi-Han. However, Hanzo would emerge from hell as Scorpion and kill Bi-Han in the first Mortal Kombat out of revenge.
However, it was not Bi-Han who murdered his clan, but the sorcerer Quan-Chi. He would later take his revenge on Quan-Chi by torturing him in the Netherrealm in the original timeline. Up until Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, he would remain a bit of a neutral character, choosing the side that would offer him the chance to resurrect his loved ones.
Scorpion in Mortal Kombat (2011)

Scorpion would follow mostly the same plot in Mortal Kombat (2011), defeating and killing Bi-Han in the first Mortal Kombat tournament. However, he ends up under Quan-Chi’s thrall in Mortal Kombat X and is freed from him by Sonya Blade, Raiden, and Johnny Cage.
Human again after a long time, Hanzo started a new Shirai Ryu dedicated to protecting the Earthrealm. He even made peace with the second Sub-Zero Kuai Liang, and the two are now fast allies. However, he does kill Quan-Chi in Mortal Kombat X, indirectly leading to Shinnok rising again.
In an encounter with his past self in Mortal Kombat 11, Scorpion manages to sway him away from his path filled with hatred. Unfortunately, D’Vorah, working on behalf of Kronika, was able to kill the older Hanzo Hasashi. However, the younger one, on seeing the new Shirai Ryu, joins with the heroes in the final assault on Kronika.
Scorpion in Mortal Kombat 1

After Fire God Liu Kang rebooted the timeline again, it is Kuai Liang who is now Scorpion in this timeline. However, even in this timeline, Scorpion and Sub-Zero are not meant to stay on the same side for long. As Bi-Han chooses to lead the Lin Kuei in a different direction, Kuai Liang now opposes his brother and continues to align with the heroes.
