Ryu Hayabusa is one of the most iconic characters in the history of gaming, but surprisingly takes a backseat in Ninja Gaiden Ragebound. The latest entry in the series puts the iconic enigma on the shelf, instead opting to focus on Kenji, Ryu’s protégé.

The game begins with Ryu showing you the path of the ninja, guiding you through a training course meant to test even the most veteran of shinobis. The obstacle course is hard, but that is the point. Once you learn to get through the challenges, Ryu states that he has another challenge for you if you’re up for the task. Yes, it is exactly the challenge you dread – a duel with Ryu himself.

Fighting Ryu is no easy task. He hits like a truck and has tons of moves you have never seen before. The fight is akin to fan service for longtime fans of Ryu, a celebration of how powerful and legendary the enigma is. You fight and you lose, believing it to be the natural order of things.

However, that is not the case. You can beat Ryu in the tutorial duel. In fact, you’re even encouraged to do so, as beating Ryu is one of the level challenges. The problem is, Ryu is by far the hardest boss in the game. It’s no easy task, but we’re here to help you beat him.

Ryu has a few attacks that he uses to deal damage. Below, we’ve listed all those attacks and have shared tips to counter them.

  • Triple Slash Combo: Ryu does a 3-hit combo where he moves forward with each hit. Jump over him to dodge, or run to the other end of the arena. Rush to him immediately at the end of the combo to exploit the opening.
  • Spinning Slash: Ryu will spin like a tornado and rush at you. Guillotine boost over him to counter this attack.
  • Smoke Bomb and Lunge (Phase 2): Ryu will drop a smoke bomb and disappear before teleporting in mid-air and lunging at you. Dodge at the last second to evade.
  • Stab (Phase 2): Jump over him to dodge this attack. He only uses this if you’re too close, so don’t get greedy when attacking him.

As you chip away at his HP and bring it to the final third, he’ll mix and match these attacks in succession. Use the opening at the end of each attack to strike him down.
