Nintendo has revealed a confirmed Direct date following the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement, here’s everything you need to know.
Nintendo has finally unveiled the highly anticipated successor to the Nintendo Switch, aptly titled the Nintendo Switch 2. Following a myriad of leaks and rumors, the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement finally came through with a dedicated trailer showcasing the console in all its glory.
On the surface, the Switch 2 is essentially a mid-gen refresh of the original Nintendo Switch, somewhat akin to the Wii U. However, unlike the Wii U, the Switch 2 is a significant jump in terms of raw power and performance over the original Nintendo Switch. Furthermore, the new console also comes with some major improvements over its predecessor while also staying true to its hybrid nature.
Following the announcement, Nintendo also confirmed a dedicated Nintendo Direct. The Direct will properly showcase the new console, its many features, improvements, and perhaps also the new games that will be released alongside it. Here’s everything you need to know about Nintendo Switch 2’s announcement, the upcoming Nintendo Direct, and more.
When Is the Nintendo Direct for Nintendo Switch 2?
The dedicated Nintendo Direct for the Switch 2 is scheduled for April 2, 2025. Much like any other regular Nintendo Direct showcase, the Switch 2 Direct will be a digital event. The Direct will mostly be focused on the Switch 2. The event will primarily be showcasing everything the Switch 2 brings to the table, compared to the original Switch.
Furthermore, it’s very likely that the showcase will also feature a good look at the new console’s backwards compatibility. Nintendo has already confirmed that the Switch 2 is compatible with the majority of the Switch games. Furthermore, the Switch 2 will support Switch games in both digital and physical formats.
Here’s the official statement given by Nintendo regarding Switch 2’s backwards compatibility:
“Nintendo Switch 2 plays both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.”
Lastly, the Switch 2 trailer also gave a glimpse at what looks like a new Mario Kart game. While Nintendo did not reveal any specifics regarding it, the track as well as the vehicles used in the trailer looks unlike anything present in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. As such, it’s very likely that the Direct will also dedicate a few minutes to showcasing the new games that fans can expect alongside the console’s launch.
You can watch the Nintendo Direct on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel. Additionally, Nintendo also adds highlights of the showcase on its official X (formerly Twitter) account. Keep an eye out on Nintendo’s official social accounts for details on the Direct and Switch 2.
When Is the Nintendo Switch 2 Releasing?
As of writing this article, Nintendo has not revealed any official release date for the Switch 2. However, the Switch 2 reveal trailer did mention 2025 as the target release window for the console. Furthermore, given Nintendo already announced a dedicated Direct for the console, the release date will likely be announced during the showcase. Fans should keep an eye out for the upcoming Direct for more details on Nintendo Switch 2 and its release date.
