The Joy-Cons for the Nintendo Switch are easily one of the most innovative aspects of the console. A hybrid controller system that doubles as two separate controllers for couch co-op is an incredibly cool idea, at least on paper. While there’s no doubt that the Joy-Cons are quite innovative for a controller, they aren’t without their flaws.

The biggest, and perhaps the most obvious flaw with the Joy-Cons is their size and in-hand feel. Even when used in a pair, the Joy-Cons never match up to the Xbox or PlayStation controllers. This is precisely why most Nintendo Switch users prefer to go with the Switch Pro Controller over the regular Joy-Cons.

However, with the upcoming Switch 2, Nintendo aims to rectify that. The Switch 2’s Joy-Cons are not only bigger but also come with some really cool upgrades that make it a worthy contender against the likes of the DualSense and the Xbox Series X|S controller. Here’s a look at all the upgrades (that we know of so far) for the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons.

How Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons Stack Against the Regular Joy-Cons?

The Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons are considerably bigger than the original Switch’s regular Joy-Cons. Furthermore, instead of being connected to the metallic side rails that you slide the controllers on, the Switch 2’s Joy-Cons are magnetic. As such, there will be much less wear and tear while you regularly connect and remove the Joy-Cons from the console’s housing.

Furthermore, the Nintendo Switch 2’s Joy-Cons also come with IR sensors on both controllers. On the original Nintendo Switch, only the right Joy-Con had an IR sensor. Having two IR sensors hints at Nintendo’s plans to use more motion gesture-related gimmicks in games.

The Switch 2 Joy-Cons also seem to use a completely different connecting interface compared to the regular Joy-Cons. Before the official announcement of the console, some leaks suggested that Nintendo is using “Hall-Effect” sticks for Switch 2’s Joy-Cons. The Hall-Effect joysticks don’t feature a traditional potentiometer. Instead, these joysticks operate on a non-contact magnetic connection. As such, the Hall-Effect sticks aren’t prone to drifting, which was one of the major issues with the Switch’s Joy-Cons.

Unfortunately, Nintendo has not confirmed anything regarding the Switch 2 Joy-Con’s internals and its use of Hall-Effect sensors. However, if the leaks are believed to be true, the Switch 2’s Joy-Cons could potentially be fixing what is one of the biggest issues that plagued the original Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Cons.

As of writing this article, Nintendo has not revealed any confirmed release window for the Switch 2. However, the announcement of the new console did come with the confirmation of a 2025 release. Furthermore, Nintendo also confirmed a dedicated Direct showcase for Switch 2 on April 2, 2025.

The Direct will primarily showcase the Switch 2’s hardware and how it evolves over its predecessor. It can also be speculated that Nintendo will reveal the official release date as well as the pricing structure for their upcoming console during the Direct.
