The RTX 5070 is Nvidia’s answer for gamers who want a decent GPU for 1440p gaming. It is a direct successor to the RTX 4070 that was released in 2023. Nvidia promises to deliver substantially better performance with the new graphics card, despite offering the same amount of memory. In this article, we are going to find out just how much better the RTX 5070 is over the RTX 4070. Read on to learn more.

Nvidia RTX 5070 vs RTX 4070: Detailed Comparison

The Nvidia RTX 5070 is designed on the latest Blackwell architecture and features support for Neural Rendering technologies. Current games do not use this technology yet, but games released with it should run well on this GPU. On the other hand, the RTX 5070 is based on the older Ada Lovelace architecture. Before we begin comparing the two graphics cards in actual game benchmarks, let’s check out their specs first.

Specs Comparison

Here are the specs of the Nvidia RTX 5070 and RTX 4070:

SpecificationsNvidia RTX 5070Nvidia RTX 4070

Shader cores61445888
RT cores4846
TMUs192184
ROPs8064
Base core clock speeds2325 MHz1920 MHz

Memory bus width192-bit192-bit
Memory bandwidth672.0 GB/s504.2 GB/s
Manufacturing node5nm5nm
Thermal design power (TDPs)250W200W

According to the specs table, the new RTX 5070 has a slightly higher number of shader cores, TMUs, ROPs, RT cores, and clock speed than the RTX 4070. However, those differences are tiny. However, the former’s GDDR7 memory is significantly faster than the latter’s GDDR6X. Therefore, it will be interesting to see how much better the new RTX 5070 is, considering such a small specs bump.

Performance Comparison

Here’s how Nvidia RTX 5070 and RTX 4070 perform in some popular games released in the last five years:

GamesNvidia RTX 5070Nvidia RTX 4070
God of War Ragnarok129 FPS107 FPS
Kingdom Come Deliverance 273 FPS56 FPS
Forza Horizon 5140 FPS115 FPS
Cyberpunk 207774 FPS60 FPS
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 264 FPS54 FPS
Black Myth Wukong46 FPS37 FPS
Starfield68 FPS59 FPS
Red Dead Redemption 2114 FPS94 FPS
Horizon Forbidden West97 FPS80 FPS
Ghost of Tsushima72 FPS64 FPS

Note: The two GPUs tested here were evaluated at a 1440p resolution with High/Ultra Settings, unless otherwise specified. All the FPS numbers were sourced from the Testing Games channel on YouTube. For the tests, the two graphics cards were paired with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU.

In the 10 tested games, the Nvidia RTX 5070 delivers 20.7% more FPS than the RTX 4070 on average. While that is a decent performance improvement, it’s nothing extraordinary. We were hoping for a bigger performance jump, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here. Also, there’s no increase in memory capacity either.

Price Comparison

The Nvidia RTX 5070 currently costs $523.79 on Amazon. On the other hand, the old RTX 4070 is no longer in production, so it is not officially available for sale anymore. However, in the used market, it costs around $449 and above. Therefore, the RTX 4070 is not significantly cheaper, despite being used.

Final Verdict on Nvidia RTX 5070 vs RTX 4070

The Nvidia RTX 5070 is better than the RTX 4070 and delivers around 21% more performance in games. The former also supports modern technologies, such as Neural Rendering and DLSS MFG.

Games built with Neural Rendering will have an advantage on the RTX 5070, but that is yet to happen, so that’s no real advantage at this moment. In spite of that, the RTX 5070 is still a better GPU and is available for less than $525 brand new. However, if you already own the RTX 4070, then there’s no need to upgrade, since the performance uplift isn’t big enough.
