Oblivion Remastered puts you inside an expansive world, with hundreds of locations to explore and secrets to uncover. Even so, there are certain rare items that you may miss out on if you fail to go to a specific part of the map, interact with certain characters, or start particular side quests. Painted Troll Fat is one such rare alchemical ingredient that you can only get during one optional mission in the game.
However, it is a resource you’ll want to have in your inventory. In this guide, we’ll explain how you can gather Painted Troll Fat in Oblivion Remastered and why it’s important.
How To Get Painted Troll Fat in Oblivion Remastered
Follow the steps below to start and complete the “Brush with Death” quest, which gives you access to Painted Troll Fat in the game:
- Step 1: Enter Lythandas’s house in the city of Cheydinhal and speak to Tivela inside. She’ll inform you about her missing painter husband.
- Step 2: Using the key Tivela provides, enter Lythandas’s studio and interact with the painting canvas featuring the artwork of a troll.
- Step 3: You’ll enter the painting and speak with Lythandas, who’ll tell you how a thief stole his Brush of Truepaint. After that, the thief drew Painted Trolls to protect himself and prevent Lythandas from pursuing him inside the painting.
- Step 4: Use the turpentine Lythandas provides to coat your weapon of choice. It will increase your damage against the Painted Trolls.
- Step 5: Kill the six Painted Trolls in the area and loot their bodies to get 1x Painted Troll Fat from each.
- Step 6: Find the body of the thief and loot the Brush of Truepaint off his corpse.
- Step 7: Return the brush to Lythandas to escape the painting and complete the quest.
As a reward, you’ll get an Apron of Adroitness. Equip it to gain a bonus to your Intelligence and Agility stats.

How To Use Painted Troll Fat in Oblivion Remastered
The Painted Troll Fat is one of the only alchemical ingredients that can fortify and restore both magicka and health. So, you can make extremely powerful restorative potions with this ingredient. However, keep in mind that you only get 6x Painted Troll Fat in the game. If you complete the Mages Guild questline and become the Arch-Mage, you can get your hands on more of this ingredient.
Simply place the Painted Troll Fat in the Arch-Mage’s special chest to duplicate the item. You can do this an infinite number of times to get as many of the ingredient as you want.
