In Oblivion Remastered, side quests often involve more than simple errands. One such quest, Unfriendly Competition, tasks you with uncovering shady dealings in the Imperial City’s Market District. If you are unsure where to start or how to find Thoronir, here’s a clear and structured walkthrough to guide you without giving too much away all at once.

Steps To Find Thoronir in Oblivion Remastered

Start Your Investigation

You can trigger this quest through two possible conversations. Head to the Market District and speak with either Ogier Georick or Jensine. Both are local merchants uneasy about another seller’s pricing methods. If you first approach Ogier, he points you toward Jensine for further details. Starting with Jensine lets you get all the context upfront.

Your goal now shifts to gathering information on Thoronir, the merchant at the center of the suspicion.

Locate Thoronir’s Shop

Thoronir runs a store named Copious Coinpurse, also situated in the Market District. This is your next destination. Time matters here—plan your visit between 8 AM and 7 PM. The shop remains closed outside those hours.

Inside, Thoronir keeps things professional and avoids anything too revealing. You won’t gather much directly from this initial interaction. It’s what comes after that gives you the real lead.

Once the store closes, you need to keep an eye on Thoronir’s movements. Wait outside using the in-game “Wait” function until about 7–8 PM. At that point, Thoronir steps out and takes a short walk.

He heads to The Merchants Inn, which is still within the Market District. While you are not required to go inside, tracking his movement is important. Follow from a distance to avoid detection.

Thoronir doesn’t stay at the inn long. Eventually, he leaves and goes to a small garden west of the inn. It’s easy to miss if you are not zoomed in on your map. Look for a well surrounded by grass and a few scattered trees.

At this point, you are looking for a second person—Agarmir. He arrives and waits near a tree stump. Shortly after, Thoronir joins him. Your role here is passive. Find a good hiding spot—bushes or behind a tree work fine—and remain close enough to trigger their discussion. They only start speaking if they think no one’s around.

This is where things take a turn. You now know who’s really behind the pricing scheme.

Track Thoronir’s Partner in Crime

Once their chat ends, they part ways. Now, your focus shifts to Agarmir. He exits through the southern end of the garden and walks through several parts of the city. Stay on him, but keep your distance.

He eventually arrives at Talos Plaza and enters his house. If you are too early or too late, the door may be locked. Wait until around 7 PM, then use lockpicking (Average difficulty) to enter while he’s away.

Inside, there’s a second locked door leading to the basement. This, too, needs an Average-level pick. Move toward the back corner and grab a book titled Macabre Manifest. This item confirms what’s going on. It’s not enough to read it—you must take it with you.

What Comes Next

With solid proof in your hands, it’s time to return to the shop. Your next conversation with Thoronir will go differently now that you have evidence of his supplier’s methods. What you choose to do afterward continues the chain of events, but you have now completed the most difficult part: learning the truth through action and observation.
