PEAK: How To Use Pickaxes

Pickaxes in PEAK’s Mesa biome help Scouts restore stamina mid-climb, but their durability is limited, requiring careful use in co-op.

The third level in PEAK is the Mesa biome, which challenges Scouts with its steep canyon-like landscape, violent tornadoes, and tricks such as mirages. More so than prior biomes, Mesa increases the value of stamina preservation with scarce natural food sources, sun damage, and thorny cacti, which deal damage if you get too close.

Fortunately, the biome has a few key additions that can help regenerate your stamina. One item that allows Scouts to replenish stamina mid-climb is the pickaxe. Seemingly left behind by the antecedent survivors of the island, these implements offer a brief respite during climbs. Because stamina depletes rapidly on Mesa’s sheer rock faces, finding a pickaxe at the right moment can mean the difference between a successful ascent and a costly fall.

Pickaxes in PEAK can be found embedded in the cliff walls of the Mesa biome. To use a pickaxe, climb up to it and press the interact key (E) while pointing your cursor at the tool. Hang onto the pickaxe while your stamina replenishes, then continue climbing onward.

While you cling to the pickaxe, cracks begin to form around the point where it’s embedded in the rock. Holding onto the pickaxe for too long will cause the cracks to spread, eventually breaking it. Once broken, the pickaxe disappears entirely, so you cannot return to it later

When playing co-op, hold onto the pickaxe for a short time. Let go once you have enough stamina to complete the climb ahead. Doing so is important because the pickaxe has limited health, and any other player using it after you will have less time to use it before it breaks.

The Mesa Update added pickaxes to the game, alongside mineshafts. While this may be a part of the theme, pickaxes in PEAK aren’t usable for mining. They only function like pitons found in the Alpine biome. However, unlike pitons, pickaxes come preset, cannot be reused, and offer only very limited durability.

Where To Find Pickaxes

Pickaxes are located on steep cliff walls in the Mesa biome. While they generate randomly based on the map seed, pickaxes are perfect for creating an easy path to climb higher up the mountain. Their wooden handles are camouflaged by the reddish rock, so it’s easier to keep a lookout for their metal pick heads. It’s best to scan the cliffs from a distance before committing to a route, as spotting one early can save you a long detour or a dangerous climb.
