Persona 5 The Phantom X Combat Overview

If you have played Persona 5/Royal (or any other Persona game) previously, you might already be familiar with a lot of the combat mechanics of this game. However, there are still an ample number of changes that you should know.
Persona 5: The Phantom X has turn-based combat, where you utilize basic attacks, alongside guns and Personas to deal damage. There are various elemental skills that each character can use. This elemental system will form the crux of your strategy, as you will need to plan around enemy weaknesses and resistances.
Additionally, you can use various combat mechanics like One More, Baton Pass, and All Out Attacks to further amplify your damage. Team building will be another crucial part of these battles, as, other than the main character, Wonder, other characters are limited to just one Persona.
Persona 5 The Phantom X Elemental System

There are 10 elemental affinities you need to watch out for in-game:
- Physical
- Gun
- Fire
- Ice
- Wind
- Electric
- Nuclear
- Psychic
- Light/Bless
- Curse
Apart from these, there is one final type of damage — Almighty damage — which cannot be blocked, repelled, or drained.
Persona 5 Phantom X Personas Overview

Each Persona and enemy you face will have a set elemental resistances and weaknesses. Additionally, your Personas will be equipped with skills that can deal damage and/or support your part.
In addition, you will have access to passive skills, which can support your character without being actively used. Moreover, there is also an Awareness system, which activates when you get duplicate units of the same character.
There are different classes for each Persona as well. We have not seen a particular class system for Personas before. Instead, they were classified using the Arcana system earlier. These classes are:
- Assassin: Specializes in single-target damage dealing.
- Sweeper: AOE damage dealers.
- Medic: Provide healing to the party.
- Guardian: Defensive role, provides shields and enhances survivability.
- Strategist: Buff/support role
- Saboteur: Debuff enemies
- Elucidator: Similar to Saboteur, except they don’t take part in active combat, and execute skills occasionally.
Initially, you might find that using any party composition works. However, you will need a well-rounded and balanced team if you want to take on tougher challenges, survive longer in battles, or finish them faster.
Battle Mechanics

Since this is a turn-based game, you need to carefully make your choices on what skills to use every turn. You will not only have to manage your HP and SP, but also ensure that you defeat your enemy swiftly. So, you will need to master all the extra mechanics that exist in battle to turn the tide in your favor.
These are:
- One More: Whenever you hit an enemy weakness (or do a critical hit), you gain the opportunity to attack them again using a specific skill.
- Baton Pass: If you down an enemy, instead of utilizing the One More mechanic, you can Baton Pass the extra attack to a teammate, allowing them to attack instead.
- Gun Attacks: Characters can also use gun attacks, which do not cost anything to use.
- All Out Attack: This is an extremely strong move, which is performed by the whole party together. You can only use this if you can take down all the enemies present.
- Highlights: This functions similarly to the Showtime attack from Persona 5 Royal. This Highlight meter charges over time during battle. Once filled, you can unleash a powerful skill, depending on the character. The Highlight for the protagonist, Wonder, depends on the currently equipped Persona.
