In 2017, popular streamer PewDiePie was embroiled in a controversy when he used a racial slur during a YouTube livestream.

The 27-year-old video blogger referred to an opponent as a “f**king ni**er” while live-streaming the online game PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds on September 11, 2017. However, he quickly rectified himself, explaining that he did not intend it in a bad way.

His racist remark sparked an outburst. Game developers stated that they would oppose his attempts to utilize their work to generate his videos. Sean Vanaman, co-founder of Campo Santo, tweeted that he would file a copyright claim to get YouTube to remove Kjellberg’s video of Vanaman’s game Firewatch.

PewDiePie had already lost significant revenue streams as a result of an investigation earlier that year. It revealed at least nine videos over a six-month period containing Nazi imagery or antisemitic jokes.

PewDiePie’s Response to the Controversy

After the video surfaced, social media exploded with criticism of the YouTuber.

A day later, on September 12, 2017, PewDiePie apologized for using a racial slur during the livestream, stating that he was “disappointed in himself”. In a short video posted to his YouTube channel, the streamer stated that he was “not going to make any excuses” for saying the n-word in the middle of a game, “because there are no excuses for it.” He said:

“I’m disappointed in myself because it seems like I’ve learned nothing from all these past controversies. It’s not that I think I can say or do whatever I want and get away with it, that’s not it at all, I’m just an idiot, but that doesn’t make what I said or how I said it OK. It was not OK. I’m really sorry if I offended, hurt or disappointed anyone with all of this. Being in the position I am, I should know better … and I owe it to my audience and myself to do better than this.”
