The horror genre is making a comeback as Phasmophobia, the top-selling horror co-op game on Steam, returns with its first major update of 2025 – Chronicle. This update completely overhauls the Media system, which previously determined how successful your investigation was and how much money you earned each day. The update is currently available on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation VR2, and Xbox Series X/S.
This article explains how the Media system has changed in the Phasmophobia Chronicle update.

New Equipment in Phasmophobia

If you are not familiar with Media in Phasmophobia, it is a way to prove the ghost’s presence through different types of evidence, such as photos. In the Chronicle update, two new types of Media, along with new items, are introduced:
- Video: You can record paranormal activity with a video camera. Low-level activity, like poltergeist movements, yields less money, but recording the ghost during hunts earns the most.
- Sounds: Microphones now have more uses beyond listening from the truck. You can use the sound recorder to capture the ghost attempting to communicate. You earn more money depending on how clear the response is.
With these additions, the CCTV system has been completely revamped. You can now view up to five recordings simultaneously, allowing you to capture video evidence directly from the safety of your truck.
Unique Media System

The old star rating system for judging media has been replaced. You will now receive either “Unique” or “Duplicate” based on the type of activity you choose to record. Unique Media functions as three-star proofs, while duplicates count as a single star. This new system lets you earn more money, but requires you to remember what you have already documented.
Future Plans for Phasmophobia
With the release of the Chronicle update, developers will focus on smaller yet impactful updates, such as map reworks and new locations. The second major update planned for 2025, called the Player Overhaul, will introduce character variants and new animations. Lastly, the highly anticipated Horror 2.0 update is scheduled for 2026, as developers have committed significant time and effort to deliver their biggest content update yet.
