The Pokemon GO August Community Day Winner, as voted on by 78% of players who participated in an official poll, is Rookidee. The Generation VIII early bird Pokemon beat out Lechonk, Wimpod, and Frillish to be declared the winner. It will now feature in the Pokemon GO Community Day for August. Rookidee first appeared in the mainline Pokemon games Sword and Shield. It made its Pokemon GO debut on January 21, 2025, as part of the Steeled Resolve event.
Pokemon GO August Community Day Winner: Why Did Players Vote for Rookidee?
There was clearly a demand for Rookidee among the player base. Subsequently, the next choice after it, Wimpod, only had 11% of the votes. Moreover, that could be more of a result of players wanting to collect Wimpod Candy due to its high evolution cost of 400.
Rookidee evolves into the Flying/Steel dual-type Corviknight, a popular choice in Pokemon GO. Its typing gives it seven normal resistances (Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Ground, Normal, Psychic, and Steel) and three double resistances (Bug, Poison, and Grass).
As a result, it only has two weaknesses (Electric and Fire). This in combination with its bulk makes it a great pick to defend gyms in the game. It is also stellar in the Great League and Master League, the competitive meta of Pokemon GO.

In comparison, Wimpod’s evolution Golisopod is a decent attacker but is hard to farm for—given its extremely high Candy requirements. For Lechonk and Frillish, the main draw was to collect their male and female Shiny forms, which are different for these Pokemon. However, neither are of particular utility in either the PvP (the GO League) or the PvE (Gyms and Raids) meta.
