All three Kalos starters have received a Mega Evolution in Pokemon Legends Z-A, which also includes Chesnaught. This Pokemon can not only take a bunch of hits, but dish them back as well.

The upcoming Mega Evolution will also add to its defensive and offensive capabilities.

Disclaimer: This article will be updated with new information once Mega Chesnaught is available for testing. However, not many changes are expected since its Mega Evolution only strengthens its already powerful stats.

Here is the ideal moveset for Chesnaught in Legends Z-A:

  • Spiky Shield
  • Wood Hammer
  • Thunder Punch
  • Brick Break

Spiky Shield is a defensive move on the already bulky Chesnaught. It acts similarly to Protect, but has an additional effect of damaging anyone who uses contact moves against it. This will be great for protecting Chesnaught against many devastating Flying-type moves like Brave Bird.

Wood Hammer is the strongest Grass-type move that Chesnaught can learn. It has 120 base power, with the only downside being recoil damage. However, Chesnaught already has a high Defense and HP stat, making this recoil manageable.

Thunder Punch is also a counter option against Flying types. You will likely see Pokemon like Gyarados many times in competitive play. Thunder Punch will be a swift neutralizer for these.

Brick Break is a good Fighting option in competitive matches, especially against Light Screen and Reflect. However, if you want something a bit stronger, you can consider Close Combat. However, you should be careful as your defenses will be reduced afterwards.

Other alternative options for any of these moves are Leech Seed, Bulk Up, Bullet Seed, and Poison Jab.

You should use Nature Mints to change Chesnaught’s nature into one of the following:

  • Adamant (+Atk/-SpA)
  • Brave (+Atk/-Spe)

Chesnaught is already a slow Pokemon, with a focus on Attack. Ideally, you should pick Adamant since you should not be using Special moves with this Pokemon anyway. However, Brave is a decent alternative, since Chesnaught is not that fast.

Chesnaught Stats and Location

You will need to get a Chespin, evolve it into Quilladin at level 16, and then into Chesnaught at level 36. You can get a free Chespin early through Side Mission 07: A Feisty Chespin. Apart from this, you can also get a higher-level Chespin later on in Wild Zone 17.

Chesnaught’s stats are as follows:

  • HP: 88
  • Attack: 107
  • Defense: 122
  • Special Attack: 174
  • Special Defense: 75
  • Speed: 64
