Malamar is a Psychic/Dark type first introduced in Generation VI. It was not a particularly powerful Pokemon, especially thanks to its 4x weakness to Bug-type moves. However, in Legends Z-A, it got a new Mega Evolution, the third to be announced. So let’s see how to use Malamar to its full potential.
Best Malamar Moveset in Pokemon Legends Z-A
These are the moves you want to use on your Malamar, especially if you are looking to Mega Evolve it later.
- Knock Off
- Reflect
- Light Screen
- Stealth Rock
Unfortunately, Malamar’s stats, even after Mega Evolution are not great. Its highest stat is its Special Defense at 120, which isn’t that high for a Mega Evolution. As such, think twice before bringing Mega Malamar to a game. The best it can do is provide support to its allies currently.
Knock Off is learned by leveling up at 14 and is useful for removing items that are not Mega Stones. Mega Malamar can set up dual screens, Reflect and Light Screen, which it learns by using Technical Machines (TMs). Light Screen is TM016 and emerges as a reward from Mable at level 11, while Reflect is TM031, which can be found from the side mission “Moves That Put Up a Wall.”

Best Malamar Nature in Pokemon Legends Z-A
Go with a Careful (+SpD, -SpA) nature to get the most out of Mega Malamar’s high Special Defense. You can get a Careful Mint from a vendor in Rogue Sector 1.
Malamar Stats and Location
You can get an Inkay from Wild Zone 11 as well as in the Lumiose Sewers. Evolve it into a Malamar at Level 30 by turning your Switch upside down in handheld mode.

- Special Attack: 68
- Special Defense: 75
- Speed: 73
