Metagross is a Steel/Psychic dual type Pokemon introduced in Generation III. This Pokemon has been a menace in the competitive meta for some time. And once it got its Mega in Generation VI, it eventually became too powerful for the general meta and was banned. So let’s see how this Pokemon with an already glorious competitive history does in the Legends Z-A meta.

Best PvP Metagross Build in Pokemon Legends Z-A For Ranked Matches

A good Metagross build will let you easily dominate most ranked battles with its high Attack and good defensive stats as well. Its Steel/Psychic typing is also great, giving it a whole slew of resistances. This is made even stronger when you give it a lot of coverage with its varying moveset and strong supporting teammates.

These are the moves you want to use on your Metagross if you plan on Mega Evolving it later in battle.

  • Heavy Slam
  • Zen Headbutt
  • Knock Off
  • Power-Up Punch

Metagross already had amazing stats in its base form. However, upon Mega Evolution, the only lackluster stat of this Pokemon, its 70 Speed, jumps up to 110. This makes Mega Metagross an amazing choice for the meta, and arguably a Pokemon you should be using in Ranked Battles.

Heavy Slam is an amazing new move that Mega Metagross now gets, making it the best Steel-type STAB owing to its massive weight of 2078.7 lbs. It even gets the move by level up. Zen Headbutt is the best physical Psychic STAB Metagross gets in this game, learnt at level 6.

Knock Off is always useful, both as a Ghost-type counter and an item remover. Teach it to Metagross via TM045, which you get from the side mission “Full Course of Battles: Three Stars.” Finally, Power-Up Punch is a great choice to boost Metagross’ attack by one stage while dealing damage. You get TM018 for it on a rooftop in Wild Zone 9.

Get the Metagrossite from Quasartico Inc for 360 Mega Shards.

Best Nature For PvP Metagross in Pokemon Legends Z-A

You can go with either an Adamant (+Atk, -SpA) or a Jolly (+Spe, -SpA) nature. While Jolly is usually the better choice for the extra speed, there are no Abilities in Legends Z-A. As such, Mega Metagross does not get the boost from Tough Claws on its contact moves. So an Adamant nature is valid here as well.

Buy an Adamant mint from a vendor in Rouge Sector 1 or a Jolly mint from Vert Sector 6.

Best Team Composition With Metagross For Ranked Matches in Pokemon Legends Z-A

A good team composition for Metagross in PvP Ranked Matches in Pokemon Legends Z-A:

Metagross serves as the linchpin for this team, with the other two acting to handle any potential counters to it. Gyarados, as a Water-type, counters both the Ground and Fire weaknesses of Metagross. Pangoro counters the remaining weaknesses to Dark and Ghost. Further, Pangoro is itself a powerful sweeper that can remove enemy defenses via Brick Break. This team can handle just about any threat that comes its way.

Best PvE Metagross Build in Pokemon Legends Z-A

Metagross is an excellent Pokemon to use in a PvE team. It has powerful defenses thanks to its Steel-type and can deal enormous damage with its high Attack. It can stay on the field for a long time and mow down opponents the whole while.

Best Moveset For PvE Metagross in Pokemon Legends Z-A

  • Heavy Slam
  • Zen Headbutt
  • Iron Head
  • Earthquake

The reasoning behind using Heavy Slam and Zen Headbutt is the same as it is for the PvP build. Iron Head can be used as a Steel-type alternative for when the opponent is also very heavy or if Heavy Slam is on cooldown. If you want, this move can be replaced with Brick Break.

Meanwhile, Earthquake is a powerful Physical move which can be used to counter Fire-types, which are Metagross’s primary weakness. Altogether, this moveset makes use of Metagross’s strengths and covers for some of its weaknesses as well.

Best Nature For PvE Metagross in Pokemon Legends Z-A

For PvE purposes, a few of the recommended natures for Metagross are:

  • Adamant (+Atk, -Sp. Atk)
  • Impish (+Def, -Sp. Atk)
  • Careful (+Sp. Def, -Sp. Atk)

As Metagross has no use for Special Attack, it can be easily sacrificed. As for the stat to raise, doing more damage is always helpful.  Alternatively, you can invest in its defenses a little more. Since its Defense is already so towering, its Special Defense may be the better choice.

Here is the best team with Metagross for the Story Mode of Pokemon Legends Z-A:

This team has near complete type-coverage, meaning you should be more than equipped to handle any threats in Lumiose. You shouldn’t face any real challenge from any challenges, whether they be in the Wild Zone or in the Z-A Royale.
