EV and IV training is one of the most important mechanics that trainers will want to know about before diving into the ranked mode to get Greninjite in Pokemon Legends Z-A. EVs and IVs are a traditional mechanic of the Pokemon games, which makes a return in this Legends game.

IVs are decided once a Pokemon spawns, while EVs are trained up by the trainer. This guide will focus on how you can train both these stats properly.

To train IVs in Pokemon Legends Z-A, you will need to collect Bottle Caps (gold or regular) and give them to specific NPCs. This process is called Hyper Training, a feature that you will already be familiar with if you have played any of the earlier Pokemon games. Refer to the image above to easily identify the NPCs who will take your Bottle Caps to IV-train (or Hyper Train) your Pokemon.

How to Get Bottle Caps to IV Train in Pokemon Legends Z-A?

You can obtain 12 confirmed Bottle Caps and 4 confirmed Golden Bottle Caps in Pokemon Legends Z-A in the following ways:

Task / RequirementBottle Caps
Reach level 36 in Mable’s Research Requests10x Bottle Caps
Complete Side Mission 96 “Let Us Battle…Artistically”2x Bottle Caps
Reach level 48 in Mable’s Research Requests3x Golden Bottle Caps
Complete Side Mission 103 “Facing the Furfrou Leage”1x Golden Bottle Cap

Other than these, there is also a chance that you will get Bottle Caps as random rewards from the Infinite Z-A Royale. In our playthrough, we have received 3x Bottle Caps twice during the course of all 15 battles during this main mission.

Where to Find NPC who Hyper Trains IVs in Pokemon Legends Z-A?

You can find the NPC who takes your Bottle Caps to Hyper Train IVs at the Justice Dojo in Pokemon Legends Z-A. Simply walk inside to find this NPC, and talk to her to trigger the entire sequence. Before using a Bottle Cap, make sure to check the IVs of your desired Pokemon. You can choose to pay the NPC with either Bottle Caps or Golden Bottle Caps in order to Hyper Train the IVs of a Pokemon.

When you use a normal Bottle Cap, it will only be able to maximize any one particular IV-stat. You will be able to choose which one you want, and you will be able to use another Bottle Cap to Hyper Train a different IV later. However, be careful as the supply of bottle caps is quite scarce, making them a rare resource. Ideally, only Hyper Train and raise the IVs of Pokemon that you want to use competitively in the PvP formats.

Note: If you want to make this process a little faster, consider catching an Alpha Pokemon. These are special variants that are larger than their average counterparts. However, what distinguishes them gameplay-wise is that they have maxed out IVs in at least three stats.

The simplest way to increase the EV for your Pokemon would be to defeat other Pokemon, wild or trainer-owned. Every species of Pokemon has a specific stat that will increase upon being defeated. Their highest base stat determines this.

So the simplest method to increase the desired EV would be to choose a certain species, then defeat it repeatedly to max out your EV. The level of the opposing Pokemon does not matter, so pick a low-level Pokemon to defeat it with ease.

You can check the EV of any Pokemon at any time by scrolling down with the right stick on the stat page. You can then use it to plan out how much further you need to go before stopping. The maximum EV a Pokemon can have in one stat is 252, with a maximum of 508 in all stats combined. Once your Pokemon has maxed out its EV for one stat, it will have a sparkle effect on its number.

Alternatives To EV Training

You can also use certain items in the game to increase the EV stats for your Pokemon. There are two types:

  • Vitamins: These items can be obtained in various places throughout the game and increase the desired EV of your Pokemon by 10.
  • Feather: There are different feathers for each stat. These will only increase the EV by one point.

However, these are not all viable in the long term, unless you figure out ways to obtain them faster than you could gain EVs by battling. Moreover, another crucial part of EV training would be to reset your EVs for stats you don’t need. You can easily do this by visiting the Rust Syndicate Office (unlocked through the main story) and talking to the NPC inside.

That was everything to know about EV and IV training in Pokemon Legends Z-A.
