Magikarp is a Water-type Pokemon you can find early on in Pokemon Legends Z-A. While the pocket monster has comical redeeming qualities, its combat prowess is somewhat lacking. However, one of the main reasons to catch Magikarp is to witness the most drastic power jump in Pokemon as you evolve it into Gyarados. If you progress far enough into the main story, you can find and capture Gyarados directly as well.

You can find Magikarp in Wild Zone 2, and later on in Wild Zone 6. However, before you can unlock Wild Zone 2 and catch Magikarp, you have to complete Main Mission 5, The City in the Shadow of Prism Tower

Upon entering Wild Zone 2, you will easily be able to spot Magikarp swimming in the water within the zone’s circular pond. If you can’t find a Magikarp at first glance, check under the wooden bridges. The Pokemon spawns in the water during the day as well as at night. Directly throwing a Poke Ball at Magikarp will likely capture it.

Gyarados is located in the river flowing through Wild Zone 11, and appears at day and night. To unlock Wild Zone 11 and find Gyarados, you must complete Main Mission 14, Reaching Rank E. If you don’t find Gyarados in the water, you’ll have to fast-travel away and then fast-travel back to Wild Zone 11. Doing so will reset the spawns, and there is a chance you will find Gyarados.

To capture Gyarados, start battling it and bring it below half health. Then, throw Poke Balls at it until the sea dragon is captured. Saving your game before the fight can be beneficial, as you can load from it in case you accidentally defeat Gyarados.

Gyarados is a Water/Flying-type Pokemon with high Attack and Special Defense stats. The easiest way to defeat it is by bringing an Electric-type Pokemon to the battle. Gyarados is also vulnerable to Rock-type Pokemon attacks. You can also evolve a level 20 Magikarp into Gyarados.
