Pokemon Legends Z-A revolves around the Mega Evolution gimmick, and there is more than one way to get the Mega Stones for your desired Pokemon. In some cases, you will be able to get them directly from quests. Other times, you will be able to get some Mega Stones after defeating a Rogue Mega Evolved monster. These special cases aside, you will have to purchase any other Mega Stones from the Quasartico Inc. headquarters, and you will need to exchange Mega Shards to ge them.

There are two ways to get Mega Shards in Pokemon Legends Z-A:
- Break Mega Crystals in the open world.
- Obtain from certain Side Quests and Infinite Z-A Royale.

Break Mega Crystals And Obtain Mega Shards
You can break Mega Crystals and obtain Mega Shards easily in Pokemon Legends Z-A. This is the most common and the most reliable way to get Mega Shards, since these are extremely abundant all throughout Lumiose City. Any time you spot a Mega Crystal, take out your Pokemon and have it use any move on the Mega Crystal. This will cause the structure to break and you will be able to obtain Mega Shards.
If there are a cluster of Mega Crystals in the same area, using your Pokemon’s attacks on any one of these usually breaks all adjoining ones as well. However, you can try to aim at the Mega Crystal closest to the center of the entire cluster to have a better chance of this happening. Using Plus Moves or normal moves do not have any effect on how the Mega Crystals break.
Obtain From Side Quests and Infinite Z-A Royale
Some side quests like the “Let’s Learn About Mega Evolutions” can also reward you with Mega Shards after completing the quest. Similarly, you might also be able to get some by defeating your opponents during the Infinite Z-A Royale. However, these are not very reliable methods of acquiring Mega Shards since the amount you get are very less. Instead, finding some Mega Crystals in the open world and breaking them is a much more effective method.
