In the entire Pokemon verse, Mewtwo is undoubtedly one of the most iconic Legendaries to exist. Pokemon Legends Z-A is set in the Kalos region which has the Aura Trio Legendary – Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde. However, the full Pokedex for Legends Z-A reveals that Mewtwo is definitely present in the game. Since you can catchc the Aura Trio right now, you might also wonder whether you will be able to get Mewtwo and add it to your collection.

Is Mewtwo in Pokemon Legends Z-A?
Pokémon Legends: Z-A has two special events to catch Mewtwo and Diancie. Both events will be distributed via Mystery Gift in the future, similar to how events worked on Ruby/Sapphire and Diamond/Pearl.

Mewtwo is already in Pokemon Legends Z-A, and is locked behind Side Mission Ex 2 Project M, as revealed by Sibuna_Switch on X. However, you cannot access it right now as there is an in-game lock in it. According to the information available, there will be a Mystery Gift distribution event that will give you the items that trigger the Project M quest.
Currently, there is no information on when these Mystery Gift giveaways will take place. That said, the method will be the same as that in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. You will not require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription for this, however, you will need an active internet connection to claim them.
Since Mewtwo is a Legendary Pokemon, it is unlikely that you will be able to use it in Ranked Battles. However, it should serve as an excellent late-game option for PvE content, and will likely make its way to many end-game teams in Pokemon Legends Z-A.
