In the lead up to the release of Pokemon Legends Z-A, new leaks indicate that some Mythicals and Legendaries are getting Mega Evolutions.

In the lead-up to Pokemon Legends Z-A, the game has started to be datamined, leading to new leaks. One of them comes from a tweet indicating that several Mythical and Legendary Pokemon, including Darkrai, Zeraora, and Heatran, have associated Mega Stone items. This all but implies that they are likely to get new Mega Evolutions for the game.
Which Mythical and Legendary Pokemon Might Be Getting Mega Evolutions in Legends Z-A?

This information comes from a user named @Kaphotics on X who discovered that Zeraora, Heatran, and Darkrai allegedly all had associated Mega Stone items. If that is the case, it seems very likely that Legends Z-A players will see these Mega Evolutions. However, whether they will be available in the base game or relegated to the DLC is yet to be seen.
This isn’t the first time Mythical and Legendary Pokemon have received Mega Evolutions. Diancie, one of three Mythicals from the Kalos region, was the only Pokemon from Generation VI to receive a Mega Evolution in its debut generation. Even more powerful Legendaries like Latios, Latias, and Rayquaza have received Mega Evolutions.
Will Mega Evolutions Make These Pokemon Competitively Viable?

Mythical Pokemon like Darkrai and Zeraora are usually not allowed in standard VGC competitions, only showing up in regulations like Regulation J that aren’t used at tournaments. As a matter of fact, Darkrai’s move Dark Void, which can put both opponents to sleep in VGC, got a nerf because Smeargle used it really well. So if the reason behind the restriction is limited availability, that seems highly unlikely to change.
Heatran is another story. This Sinnoh Legendary has won Worlds twice, in 2013 and 2015, used by Arash Ommati and Shoma Honami, respectively. However, it has seen less use in recent years, with other Fire-types like Incineroar being preferred instead. So getting a Mega Evolution may help its viability, making it a major force in the competitive scene once again.
