When forming a team of Pokemon, there are many factors to consider. This is because a Pokemon has many factors that decide its viability in combat. These range from its stats, typing, moveset, availability, and roles.

All of this, and more, will be discussed below.

Types Are the Bread and Butter of Team Building

Every Pokemon belongs to one or two Types. This typing is extremely important as it determines two things:

  • The damage they receive. If your type is weak against another type, you will take more damage. On the other hand, you can also resist a type for the opposite effect.
  • The damage they will deal. If you use a move that is of the same type as the Pokemon, then the move will get STAB (Same Type Attack Boost).

Make sure that your team is defensively balanced. This means that you should have Pokemon of varying types, with all of them having different weaknesses and resistances. This will ensure that you do not get swept by a single Pokemon which had a type advantage.

Stats Are Important For Making the Perfect Team

One of the most obvious ways to judge a Pokemon is through its stats. Stats are one of the core factors that decide how much damage you will deal and receive. As a general rule, more stats will mean that a Pokemon is stronger. However, there are, of course, exceptions to this as well. Mega Evolutions are another way through which you can temporarily increase your Pokemon’s stats.

This is also the reason why Legendary Pokemon are considered extremely strong. They have above 600 stats, which means that they have a lot of room to allocate those stats, without any of them being worse off.

Stat Distribution

There are six stats a Pokemon will have:

  • HP
  • Attack
  • Defense
  • Special Attack
  • Special Defense
  • Speed

You will not just want six Pokemon who have an extremely high Attack stat. Balance matters. This brings us to the next point.

Every Pokemon Has a Role To Play

Every Pokemon has a role it will play within a team. Some Pokemon have a higher Attack stat, while others will focus on Special Attack. Naturally, this will mean that you should use a Physical Attacker when the opponent has low Defense, and a Special Attacker when they have lower Special Defense.

Others could just not be offensively inclined. Instead, they could be bulky Pokemon that whittle down the enemy over time. Some Pokemon do not even have to use any form of offensive moves. Instead, they can have a variety of buffing moves that would benefit the whole party. An example of this would be a Pokemon being used to set up Light Screen, Reflect, and Safeguard.

Naturally, not every Pokemon can play every role. The moveset will be a deciding factor in determining the role.

Not Every Pokemon Will Have Access To Every Move

A Pokemon is only as good as the moves it can use. You can have all the stats in the world, but if you don’t have the moves to showcase these stats, then there is no point. Conversely, some Pokemon can be great simply due to their movesets, despite mediocre stats.

These will involve a Pokemon knowing status moves or set-up moves. These include moves like Toxic, Will-o-Wisp, Thunder Wave, Spikes, Stealth Rock, etc. If a Pokemon knows Spikes and Toxic, then it does not need high offensive stats. In this situation, even mediocre stats do not matter.

Conversely, some Pokemon can have amazing stats, but their type coverage concerning moves may be bad. This would make them subpar compared to other options. That was the complete team builder guide for Pokemon Legends Z-A.
