With Wondrous Patch releasing as part of Phantasmal Flames, let’s look at how similar cards have impacted the Pokemon TCG meta in the past.

One of the more interesting cards from the Phantasmal Flames expansion of the Pokemon TCG is Wondrous Patch. This card lets you attach a Basic Psychic Energy from your discard pile to a Psychic Pokemon card on its Bench. Since you can normally only attach a single Energy to your Pokemon each turn, being able to attach more Energy can be game-breaking. Especially since Wondrous Patch is an Item card, meaning you can play more than one each turn.
This article will look at similar Patch cards in Pokemon TCG history. This will show the impact they had in the past and give us an idea of what Wondrous Patch might be like on release.
History of Patch Cards in the Pokemon TCG

Dark Patch
First introduced as part of the Lost Explorers expansion of Pokemon TCG, Dark Patch has arguably been the most influential card on this list. As its name indicates, it worked in a similar way to Wondrous Patch. Except it attached Darkness Energy to Benched Darkness Pokemon.
It was part of two back-to-back World Championship-winning decks in 2012 and 2013, immediately upon its release. Dark Patch would return again as part of 2022’s Astral Radiance expansion, where it would win the 2024 Jr. World Championships again.
Aqua Patch
Aqua Patch was a similar card introduced in the Guardians Rising expansion of the Pokemon TCG for Water Energy and Water Pokemon. While nowhere near as widespread as Dark Patch, it saw more than its fair share of use. Aqua Patch was part of the decks that won both the 2017 Sr. World Championships and the 2018 Special Buenos Aires #1 event.
Metal Saucer
While not named as a Patch card, Metal Saucer functions the same way as the other cards for Metal Energy and Pokemon. Released as part of the Sword and Shield expansion in 2020, Metal Saucer has seen a lot of use. This is noteworthy as during this period, in-person events were limited due to the pandemic. Some of the events where Metal Saucer was part of the winning deck include:
- 2020 Jr. Oceania International Championships
- 2020 Malmö Regional
- 2020 Guatemala Special Event
- 2020 Players Cup Finals
- 2021 Taiwan Regional League.
