Learn the best way to play a Tera Box deck as well as the complementary cards that enhance its performance.

Tera Box has become a dominant deck in the current TCG meta. Noctowl specifically has helped enable this archetype thanks to its ability to draw the required Trainer cards at the right time. This, combined with multiple powerful Tera Pokemon, makes this deck one to always be prepared for. So, let’s take a look at one of the best examples of a Tera Box deck and how it works.
Pokemon TCG Best Tera Box Deck Guide Overview
Tera Box is a combination of multiple little things coming together to deliver a big package in the end. After playing a few Tera Pokemon, you will need to play the Stadium card Area Zero Underdepths to increase the Bench size. This gives cards like Noctowl a huge advantage, as players can now play more of them, letting them draw useful Trainer cards. This includes the ACE SPEC Pokemon Tool Sparkling Crystal and the Supporter Crispin, both of which work really well with Tera Pokemon.

How To Play this Best Tera Box Deck in Pokemon TCG
Ideal Starting Hand
You want Fan Rotom or Ditto in your starting hand. Ditto can swap out for another Basic Pokemon in your deck if it is in the Active Spot on the first turn. Meanwhile, Fan Rotom will also let you draw the Hoothoots and Noctowls you will need if it is played on the first turn. Setting up with Area Zero Underdepths may also be a good idea, though you may want to wait in case your opponent has Stadium cards of their own to play.
Best Tera Box Deck in Pokemon TCG: Key Cards

Here’s how a typical Tera Box strategy is played out.
- On the first turn, Ditto swaps in for a Tera Pokemon, while Fan Rotom adds a bunch of the Noctowl line to your hand. Play a Hoothoot from your hand onto the Bench.
- With a Tera Pokemon on the field, set up Area Zero Underdepths. This Stadium increases your Bench size to eight if you have a Tera Pokemon in play.
- Evolve Hoothoot into Noctowl. Draw Crispin and Sparkling Crystal. Crispin lets you search for the required Basic Energy for the Tera Pokemon you have in play and even attach one of them. Similarly, Sparkling Crystal should be attached to the Tera Pokemon of choice so that its energy requirements drop.
- Terapagos ex is perhaps the best Tera Pokemon to benefit from all this setup. Its move Unified Beatdown needs only two Colorless Energy (meaning any Basic Energy will work) and gets stronger for each Benched Pokemon on your side. With Area Zero Underdepths in play and a full Bench, it deals 240 damage. It can even use its second move to slow down the flow of damage.
- Wellspring Mask Ogerpon ex can deal massive damage to a Pokemon on the opponent’s Bench with its move Torrential Pump. Teal Mask Ogerpon ex can also be used offensively but is better off as another Energy engine thanks to its ability. Pikachu ex is another Pokemon ex that has surprising durability and can be set up in a single turn with a combination of Crispin and Teal Mask Ogerpon ex.
- Lastly, non-Tera attackers like Lillie’s Clefairy ex and Bloodmoon Ursaluna ex play their usual roles of Dragon slayer and late-game cleaner, respectively.

Best Matchups

Almost every meta-relevant deck has to be wary of Tera Box, but Dragapult ex also has to deal with Lillie’s Clefairy ex, making it particularly vulnerable. Additionally, the invulnerability of Tera Pokemon to Bench sniping further diminishes this deck against Tera Box.
Counters to Tera Box Deck in Pokemon TCG

Milotic ex has single-handedly acted as a wall to Tera Box thanks to them being unable to do anything to it. That said, a deck focused around it still needs to be wary of Bloodmoon Ursaluna ex. However, if it manages to keep a Tera Pokemon in the Active Spot by keeping them asleep with its move Hypno Splash, it can handily stall out Tera Box.
Best Tera Box Deck Guide in Pokemon TCG: Tips and Tricks
Some tips to consider while using this deck:
- Latias ex should be on your Bench to ensure that all your Tera Pokemon have no Retreat Cost.
- Boss’s Orders can help with the Milotic ex issue by sending it to the Bench, where it will be vulnerable to Wellspring Mask Ogerpon ex’s Torrential Pump sniping it.
