Learn the best way to use a Tirtouga Deck in the current Pokemon TCG meta and which cards work well in this archetype.
The new Tirtouga from the Black Bolt expansion is deceptively powerful. Its move, Ancient Seaweed, deals 30 damage to the Defending Pokemon for each Item card in their discard pile. This makes it a perfect partner to Rotom from Surging Sparks, who uses its move, Crushing Pulse, to discard all Item and Tool cards from the opponent’s hand.
Pokemon TCG Best Tirtouga Deck Guide Overview
The plan is to use Rotom’s Crushing Pulse to discard Item cards, which will power up Tirtouga’s Ancient Seaweed. In fact, these two form a nice duo similar to the Seismitoad ex and Garbodor pair from past expansions, who would similarly block Item usage and Abilities. However, Tirtouga is decidedly more offensive in nature.

Ideal Starting Hand
As Rotom and Squawkabilly ex are the only Basic Pokemon in this deck, one or both of them should show up. Rotom should go in the Active Spot, as the plan is to start discarding Items as quickly as possible. Squawkabilly ex is a decent card to play on the first turn, as you can use it to draw more cards to ensure that at least one Antique Cover Fossil is on your Bench.

- Tirtouga spams Ancient Seaweed after Rotom forces the opponent to discard multiple Item cards.

Best Matchups
Flareon ex takes double damage from Ancient Seaweed and can struggle if Items like Tera Orb or Glass Trumpet are discarded by Rotom.

Joltik Box can act very quickly and doesn’t depend heavily on Items to be functional. Tirtouga also takes double damage from Lightning-type attacks, which are very common in Joltik Box decks.

Something to consider while using this deck:
- Use Iono to disrupt your opponent and search for more Antique Cover Fossil cards.
- Energy Search becomes important, as you might need either a Lightning Energy or a Water Energy depending on the situation.
- Only use Pokemon League Headquarters when Tirtouga is ready to attack, as its effect will backfire on Rotom otherwise.
