Learn whether or not Pokemon TCG Live, the online version of the physical card game, engages in pay-to-win tactics.

Unlike most pay-to-win games, Pokemon TCG Live does not let its players buy stuff like booster packs and bundles with real money. However, players who buy physical packs can redeem a code they find in-game, which could be considered an indirect monetary transaction.
In this article, we will look at the currencies available in Pokemon TCG Live and whether or not they can truly be exploited for pay-to-win tactics.
Is Pokemon TCG Pay To Win?

There are two in-game currencies in Pokemon TCG Live:
- Trainer Points: Purchasing booster packs, bundles, and in-game cosmetics for their decks.
- Trade Credits: Acquiring specific cards.
Out of the two, Trainer Points are the main currency as they are the ones used to buy packs. Trade Credits are useful for specific cards but are only obtained via duplicates you get by opening packs and bundles. This means that spending Trainer Points remains the best way to get Trade Credits.
However, neither in-game currency can be purchased with real-world money. This means they cannot be classified as microtransactions, as the only way to get them is by playing the game.
Code Cards

Code cards are the only way to actually spend money in Pokemon TCG Live. However, these can only be obtained by purchasing physical items like booster packs, preconstructed decks, Elite Trainer Boxes, and more. While doing so will let you use the code card in-game, there are limitations on how many code cards you can redeem.
The limits imposed currently are:
- Booster Pack: 400 per set
- Build & Battle Box: 25 per set
- Preconstructed Deck: 4 per deck
- Others: 4 per product for 1 or more cards and 1 per product for deck or avatar customization items.
As such, due to these hard limits in place, it is hard to say that Pokemon TCG Live is pay-to-win. A player buying packs for codes will only have a negligible advantage due to not being able to exploit the system.
