Regulation J of Pokemon VGC will allow Mythical Pokemon available in Scarlet and Violet to be used. While this format will not be used in tournaments, especially since this is taking place after Worlds 2025, players can have fun using the Mythical Pokemon they have on the online ladder. So in this article, we will look at the best of the available options to players and why they should consider using these Pokemon.

Best Mythical Pokemon To Use in VGC Regulation J

These Mythical Pokemon are expected to do well in the Regulation J VGC meta:

  • Darkrai
  • Hoopa Unbound
  • Magearna
  • Deoxys (Attack Forme)
  • Arceus

5) Darkrai

Interestingly, despite not being part of the format for long, Darkrai has had an indirect impact on VGC. Its move Dark Void was spammed by Smeargle (the only Pokemon that could learn it through Sketch) to put both of its opponents to sleep. However, after the move was banned from being used by any Pokemon other than Darkrai (and its accuracy was dropped), it hasn’t been seen since.

Darkrai’s presence in the meta could see the rise of Dark Void being spammed again. It would need some help with its accuracy issues but Prankster Pokemon like Sableye can use the move Gravity before it to give Dark Void an accuracy boost from 50% to 90%.

4) Hoopa Unbound

Hoopa Unbound shows a lot of promise with its 170 Special Attack and 160 Attack. However, it has only 80 HP and 60 Defense, making it susceptible to attacks from the physical side. Still, it has massive potential as a glass cannon, especially owing to its wide move pool. It even has a signature move, Hyperspace Hole, a Dark-type move that hits both opponents and drops their Defense by 1. Additionally, this move also hits through Protect and Wide Guard which makes it very spammable for VGC.

3) Magearna

Magearna is slow but that makes it a perfect choice for Trick Room teams. The reason why Magearna has the potential to be a huge threat in Regulation J is its ability Soul Heart. This ability gives Magearna a Special Attack boost when any Pokemon on the field is KOd. That’s right, not KOd by it, but if they are KOd in general. As a result, Magearna can quickly accumulate Special Attack boosts and sweep any team, even through resistances.

2) Deoxys (Attack Forme)

Out of all the Deoxys formes, Attack is the one that seems most geared toward VGC success. Both its attacking stats are a whopping 180 each and it has not one, but two, devastating Psychic STAB choices. On one hand, it has its signature move Psycho Boost, which has a base power of 140 and drops the user’s Special Attack by two stages. Alternatively, it could use Expanding Force while paired with Indeedee-F’s Psychic Terrain. While Expanding Force usually has 80 base power, it gets a 1.5x boost in Psychic Terrain in addition to the 1.3x boost the terrain gives to all Psychic-type moves. Oh, and it also hits both opponents in Psychic Terrain as well.

1) Arceus

Fitting that the God of Pokemon be the best Mythical in the format. Arceus’ greatest strength is its unpredictable nature as your opponent will not know what type of Arceus they are facing before it’s too late. There’s the classic Extreme Killer Arceus, where a Normal-type Arceus holds a Choice Band and spams Extreme Speed, with the additional bonus of Normal-type Terastallization (this has seen success with Dragonite in VGC). But courtesy of its ability Multitype and holding the appropriate plate, it can become any type the player needs it to be. And not only does it have the movepool to do it, thanks to having 120 in each stat, it will be hard to tell if it’s a physical or special attacker until it’s too late.
