In this guide we will look at the best ways players can counter one of the top Pokemon in the VGC format – Incineroar.

Incineroar is not only the best support Pokemon in VGC, but also the best non-Restricted Pokemon in the format. It has a great typing in Fire/Dark, access to the ability Intimidate, and has a wide movepool with multiple options that can be tailored to the player’s need. This lets it even check Restricted Legendaries like both Calyrex forms and Lunala.

In this guide, we will look at how you can deal with an opposing Incineroar and its disruptive tactics.

Incineroar is not a threat because of its damage output. Instead, this big cat threatens to play whatever role you are worried about it playing. It can use Fake Out to flinch you for a turn. It can slow pivot with either U-turn (for chip damage) or Parting Shot (to drop the target’s stats).

When it enters the field again, its ability Intimidate will lower the Attack of both the opponent’s Pokemon. It has Will-o-Wisp for spreading burns, which puts the opponent’s Pokemon on a timer as well as further lowers their Attack.

Incineroar can also remove the opponent’s item with Knock Off, or stop them from using status moves with Taunt. Oh, and it’s a pretty decent physical attacker too, with Flare Blitz coming off its 115 Attack stat, doing a chunk to its targets.

Best Pokemon to Counter Incineroar in VGC

These Pokemon do well against Incineroar for different reasons:

  • Urshifu Rapid Strike: This Pokemon’s signature move Surging Strikes deals STAB super effective Water damage to Incineroar. But more importantly, its a multi-hit move that always crits, bypassing Intimidate’s Attack drop.
  • Zamazenta: In its Crowned form, Zamazenta’s ability Dauntless Shield gives it a one-time defense boost. It can then spam the STAB Fighting-type move Body Press, which uses its Defense stat and as such isn’t lowered by Intimidate.
  • Kyogre: The Generation III Legendary may have fallen a bit in recent times, but it still sees decent use in VGC. One of the things it does well is take on Incineroar. As a Special Attacker, it doesn’t care about its Attack being lowered. Instead, it will use powerful, rain-boosted Water STAB moves like Hydro Pump, Origin Pulse, or Water Spout to destroy Incineroar.
  • Annihilape: Another pick that has fallen a bit. However, its ability Defiant gives it an Attack boost when one of its stats is lowered. This includes an Attack drop from Intimidate as well. However, it is worth noting that Annihilape is better off using this Attack boost to Final Gambit and take out a Restricted Legendary, as they are usually more valuable targets.
