In this guide, we will look at the best ways to counter one of the more defensive Restricted Legendaries in VGC – Lunala.

While most Restricted Legendaries in VGC are focused on offense, Lunala is more defensively inclined. This has led to it being paired alongside more offensively inclined Legendaries like Miraidon as a wall for the opponent to overcome. In this guide, we will look at the best Pokemon that can actually help pull this off.
How To Deal With Lunala in VGC

Lunala’s bulk not only comes from its 137/89/107 defenses but also from its ability Shadow Shield. Shadow Shield halves the damage Lunala takes from attacks as long as it is at full HP. It can also use Wide Guard to protect itself and its ally from spread attacks like Calyrex Shadow Rider‘s Astral Barrage.
However, this does not mean it is a passive wall, as its signature move Moongeist Beam gives it a powerful STAB Ghost move to work with. Additionally, it can do things that would help it both offensively and defensively. This includes Terastallizing into a Fairy type or using Calm Mind to boost its Special Attack and Special Defense by one stage.
Best Pokemon to Counter Lunala in VGC
- Dark-types and Ghost-types: While the category may seem broad, Lunala remains vulnerable to both of these types. This is because its Psychic/Ghost typing gives it a 4x weakness to them. Even if some of them are not particularly strong enough to KO Lunala through its ability and bulk, their mere presence may force it to Terastallize into a Fairy type.
- Farigiraf: This support Pokemon‘s Normal/Psychic typing makes it immune to Moongeist Beam. With the right EV investment, it can also shrug off coverage moves used by Lunala like Moonblast or Meteor Beam. Additionally, Farigiraf can use Foul Play to deal massive damage to Lunala due to the Legendary having a high base Attack stat of 113.
- Ursaluna: Another part Normal-type Pokemon that is immune to Moongeist Beam. Since Ursaluna is slow, it can take advantage of the Trick Room that Lunala occasionally sets to move first and KO it.
- Urshifu Rapid Strike: While it would need to Terastallize to ensure it is not KO’d by a Moonblast or a Psychic move like Expanding Force, it can cause problems for Lunala. Its signature move Surging Strikes breaks through Shadow Shield on its first hit. Also, Urshifu can use Taunt to prevent Lunala from using Wide Guard or Trick Room.
